I think that it is brilliant and extremely ingenious. I don’t know if my hood is unusually stiff but I do sometimes find it difficult to latch the hood down. Maybe it’s because I am very nearly 70 years old with pipe cleaner thin arms 
As someone who always gets out of the car to open the hood I have never found engaging the latch to be a problem. When you open the top from outside the car you can also easily apply light pressure to the rear window section of the hood which ensures the hood folds neatly and eliminates the ‘problem’ of the hood leading edge fouling the roll hoops.
