MX-5 from sunny South Africa

Hi all!

My name’s Ryno and I’m from Pretoria, South Africa

It all started when I went to test-drive a very nice BMW E46 320i. The Beemer was in tiptop shape and the price was attractive to say the least. 10 days later I bought an MX-5[:D]. Guess at 27 I’m still not ready to be a grown-up. I’ve actually always wanted an MX-5, but never needed one, as I already have two other cars, one of which now has to be sold unfortunately.

My MX-5 ended up being a 1996 1.8i and except for a few parking lot dents that can be expected on a car with 203000km’s on the clock and a small crack in the dashboard[:(], she’s in very good nick. This was the first Mk1 MX-5 I actually drove and in spite off my very high expectations, the driving experience was even better than I expected. Afterwards people must have thought I was retarded because I couldn’t get that stupid smile off my face.

And if I might just add: It’s definitely better with the top down.

Cheers

Hi Ryno

nice motor ryno,  just the motor to blast off to sun city, and show it off mate,

Hi Ryno

Enjoy those wonderful roads in South Africa - I drove the Van Reenen Pass a few weeks ago - awesome - however, I was driving a Peugeot 307 - not so much fun as in a '5!

I saw quite a few MX-5s around Jo’burg and Durban but not all of them had their tops down - shame - the weather is so right for a sports car.

I didn’t see any S2000s during my 4 weeks either.

Enjoy your lovely car!   [:D]

 Thanks for the welcome everyone

Well, I’ve never been through Van Reenen’s pass in a convertible, but I can imagine what it’s like without a roof spoiling the view.

Unfortunately I find that we South Africans are quite fashion conscious, so you’re more likely to find SLK’s, TT’s and those terrible French CC’s with the big boots than real driver’s cars like MX-5’s and S2000’s. Just for interests sake, here are some sales figures for February:

MX-5: 5
S2000: 1
350Z: 1
Z4: 8
TT: 20
SLK: 40
911: 27

You are right - I saw lots of SLKs, TTs, and some BMW Z4s.   Amazingly enough some of the SLKs had their tops down!

Gosh, only 1 S2K bought in February!!!    shame.   They don’t know what they are missing.

You’ll have to drive the Van Reenen pass in the '5.   I was also impressed with the Long Tom pass, although I was a passenger on that occasion.

Enjoy your car!!   [:D]

It’s a shame that Honda are ending production of the S2000 -

Honda has announced the end of the S2000 roadster with the special edition ‘Ultimate Edition’ to be debuted at the Geneva Motor Show before going on sale in the UK shortly afterwards.

Global production of S2000 will cease in June this year after selling 110,673 units worldwide.

This is a shame, but all good things must come to an end and all that.

I really do like the Honda S2K, and really it’s one of only three cars i would buy, the other two being an MX5 of course and the Nissan 350Z Roadster which is a cracker too.

Hopefully i’ll pick an S2K up at some point, would be nice to say i owned and drove one!
