MX-5 Sales Performance

Mix of data borrowed from a post on miata.net and other web sources.

The Mazda Roadster/MX-5 continues to hold its crown as the world’s best-selling two-seat sports car. Since the launch of the ND generation, its global footprint has expanded slightly, growing from 35 original markets to 36 countries as of 2025.

2025 Global Market Breakdown

Japan reclaimed its title as the top global market in 2024 and maintained that lead through 2025. Interestingly, the top 10 markets accounted for a massive 95% of all global sales last year.
Top 10 Markets by Annual Sales (CY25):

Market Sales (Rounded)
Japan 10,000
United States 8,730
United Kingdom 1,500
Germany 1,340
Mexico 1,200
Canada 1,050
Australia 820
France 790
Italy 610
Spain 430

Sales & Production Trends

The ND generation has seen significant fluctuations over the last decade. After peaking in 2017 with nearly 40,000 units sold, sales hit a low point in 2020. However, the model has seen a steady recovery since 2022.

  • 2017 Peak: ~39,800 sales

  • 2020 Trough: ~19,800 sales

  • 2025 Recovery: ~27,900 sales

All ND production remains centralised at the Ujina Plant #1 in Hiroshima. While CY25 production reached 28,230 units (a dip of 4,400 from the previous year), the outlook for the immediate future is much brighter.

    Looking Ahead: 2026 Momentum
If you’re waiting for more MX-5s to hit the showroom floor, the data is promising. Global production for the first two months of 2026 is up 28% compared to the same period in 2025, rising from 5,730 to 7,350 units.

The sales trajectory for the Mazda MX-5 in the UK over the last five years reveals a steady “recovery story.” While the 2021 numbers were bolstered by post-lockdown demand, the subsequent years show the model stabilising as a high-demand, low-volume enthusiast choice.

UK Annual Sales Figures (2021–2025)

Year UK Sales Units Market Context
2021 2,450 Peak post-pandemic “revenge buying” and strong stock availability.
2022 1,180 Significant dip due to global semiconductor shortages affecting Ujina production.
2023 1,320 Recovery begins; introduction of the “Homura” trim drives high-spec interest.
2024 1,410 Boosted by the “ND3” update (new infotainment and steering rack).
2025 1,500 Current peak.

Key Trends Driving These Numbers

  • The “ND3” Effect (2024–2025): The recent uptick in sales (from 1,320 to 1,500) is largely attributed to the 2024 model year updates.

  • Supply vs. Demand: The 2022 “trough” of 1,180 units wasn’t due to a lack of interest, but rather a lack of cars. Waiting lists in the UK stretched to 6–9 months during this period, which pushed some buyers into the used market (keeping MX-5 residuals exceptionally high).

  • Trim Mix: In the UK, approximately 70% of sales are now concentrated in the top-tier trims (Exclusive-Line and Homura). The base “Prime-Line” is increasingly rare, as UK buyers view the MX-5 as a “forever car” or a weekend luxury rather than a budget commuter.

  • The 2026 Surge: As noted in the overall production data, the 28% increase in early 2026 production is expected to land in the UK by mid-year, potentially pushing 2026 sales past the 1,600-unit mark for the first time in five years.

The UK consistently consumes about 5–6% of total global production, making it the most concentrated MX-5 market in Europe.

If I’d known I would have bought a sand coloured Homura and been the only one in the UK!

But then Grey is the best colour

Deep Crystal Blue!

Grey must include both Aero Grey and Machine Grey so I wonder if Zircon Sand is included with white. I’ve seen plenty of pics of UK cars that colour.
