Aah, all to do with the gram strategy i assume?
See here for more details
I was the one that posted the technical document in that thread😉
So with the roof open in the RF it is less stiff than the ST. Seems counter intuitive!
Maybe replace RF cross brace with a ST cross brace.
The only thing I’ve noticed in the RF with the roof down, is my dashcam (which is attached to the windscreen), rattles a lot more.
I did think of doing that, the miata thread had a guy that was going to try it, but he never updated with his thoughts.
Any - y’know, proof, that a lightweight frame and some canvas makes any discernible difference ? Hardly any of the scores of drivers I’ve seen racing MX5s do so with hoods up either-so they’re obviously missing a trick too .
Not saying the ST roof makes a difference as I don’t have experience, but doesn’t the roof have a aluminium sheet under the canvas? That could change the stiffness potentially, there were a few guys on the miata forum saying they could feel an improvement top up.
I am flabbergasted. For goodness sake just drive the car and enjoy it for what it is.
It reminds me of friends that were into music in a big way and started investing heavily in HiFi equipment. Eventually they stopped listening to the music and started listening to the ‘equipment’.
It was hinted above that having the windows up affected the way it drove!!

I do just drive the car and enjoy it😉 Maybe take a chill pill and go for a drive, people are allowed to have conversations, Afterall this is a forum.
So I am not allowed to contribute with my opinion then? No chill pill required here.

Of course you are, it just came across as you sounding frustrated with the conversation, apologies if I took it the wrong way. ![]()
I think it was also mentioned in the same thread that Mazda did the weaker cross brace on purpose in the RF, to give it a more flow or feel or something weird, to make it comparable to how the ST felt.
I don’t think windows up affects the way it drives, just that it reduces the buffeting a bit. ![]()
But RF has roof brace (Targa bar) in place in both cases.
Do you mean that back part of the hood/mechanism?
yes (i think)
Having driven both , the RF with roof down definitely has more scuttle shake than the ST. It’s still pretty minimal however
Did you try the RF with the roof up? I agree it’s not bad with the roof down, but I still think the car is better roof up.
According to Flying Miata in USA who are experts in all aspects of MX5 the RF top does not add to the rigidity of the car.
They did say that more rigid door stops make a noticeable improvement to rigidity, but state it is more difficulty to open and close the doors. I have ordered some, only about £15 so we will see. 2 months ago I went on a 700mile drive along the coast road in west Wales and I felt more comfortable, as in safe with the roof closed, but maybe I am just a big girls blouse
