MX5 V8 (updated photos)

Have had the car two years now and slowly been doing different jobs to get it how I want.

It’s had Godspeed rad, Edelbrock 500 carbs, offenhauser inlet manifold, original polished rocker covers,15" Lorbers (soon to be fitted with toyo proxes), dark red leather seats, fibre glass lip spoiler, new exhaust (hopefully soon to be changed again for side exit) and various other bits and bobs. Jobs left to do hopefully this year, piper cam, bonnet louvres, and respray nosecone and possibly viper stripes.

Looks great and I bet you get a satisfying roar when you use the loud pedal [;)]

Saw the car in STHT as well…good feature. Amazing what you can do with a 5

Lovely lookin car man. What sort of BHP does it kickout?? It looks like that engine bay was made for a V8!

At the moment its a stock V8 with 500 carbs so only pushing out about 160bhp. However it has amazing torque which makes overtaking a  joy. Got a few problems with the engine at the moment so looking at a 200 bhp turnkey replacement engine as it will probably work out cheaper than having the work done.

Cheers Andy

Nothing can beat the sound and pull of a well sorted V8.

Must be magic to drive and quite a shock to other drivers.

Just out of curiosity who’s turnkey motor are looking at ?

When it’s going well it’s a joy and the soundtrack is glorious, certainly turns a few heads[:)] As you have a Jensen you’d certainly know about the pulling power of a V8, beautiful car. Drove one many years back, bodywork was gone but the engine was fantastic.

Looking at engines from either RPI engineering (Norwich) or British American Engines (Kent)

Nothing beats the sound of a V8, I remember back in the very early 90’s I had my 2 litre Laser Capri (dont laugh people it was awesome in its day) converted professionally and had a tuned Rover V8 fitted. I had the suspension uprated, 5 speeder box from a Granada, custom prop etc and some larger wheels, the rest of the car was stock (I even left the 2.0 badges on) apart from the 2 pipes out the back, but as soon as I blipped the throttle at the lights and the car burbled and rocked it scared many a boy racer in his RS2000 into submission I can tell you (some of you young un’s won’t remember the battles between the big engined Capri’s and the Escort Mexico RS1600 and RS2000’s). As you say the pulling power is immense, mine used to pull away in 4th gear. Mind you the 15mpg (being careful) was a slight drawback!

must be nice to have an 8 that corners!!!

I wish !!! 15 is good on a run for me at a steady 70mph, more like 6-8 around town . but then a gain 7.2 litre of 70’s technology and it does make me chuckle.

Ouch!!!   The best I’ve managed is 27mpg but that was very boring, it’s usually around the 18mpg mark. It’s just one of those things you just have to floor it every so often and you can virtually hear the fuel being sucked into the carbs[::(]

I just spotted the Barracuda on your Signature , Which engine do you have as they fitted so many option its hard to tell. They even fitted up to the 440cu which is the same big block as mine.

a lowly smallblock, mileage is the same as the T5.

Very nice.

I know it’s about the engine which is smart but really like the wheels too.

Those are the third set of wheels I’ve had on this car, will be keeping these ones as I think they suit the car.
