Can anyone tell me what thes nuts are? The two nuts each side that fix the front arb brackets to the studs. Got cleaned up brackets and bar and the nuts are a mess.
If you can advise the diameter of the stud, I will post the links to carbon steel nuts of a few different thread pitches on ebay.
On the other hand get one of these and that will advise the thread pitch, I use it three or four times a month when replaceing nuts and bolts.
Thanks, I’ll do that, im travelling until Friday but I’ll measure it up. That gauge looks useful, worth adding to the toolkit I think.
You could also get one of these as well but keep it in the house as any slight dampness in an unheated garage appears to go for it.
On offer at Lidl a couple of weeks ago for less than £8.00. May still have some if you are lucky or quick.
Yes I buy a few at a time as they do not like getting dropped.
Personally I can’t imagine them being anything other than standard metric course pitch.
What size spanner are they ?
13mm spanner M8 x 1.25
17mm spanner M10 x 1.5
I clicked that link.

ROTFL
Not at all, Mazda like Subaru and Suzuki tend to use a fine pitch, higher proof stressed nuts and bolts for brakes and suspension, not always but they do tend to go for instance M10 x 1.25 pitch for this type of application. The Mazda parts list is of no help and there are also two different fine pitches in these sizes.
I suggest we do not assume any particular pitch. Mazda are also bad for reducing the AF size to smaller than the reccomended size for the say M10 and again change it more than once for the same Mxx size on a car.
I have been caught out too many time by brake and suspension fasteners across these three makes.
For those that don’t posses thread gauges another standard bolt a size smaller can used as a thread gauge to check a size bigger metric fine bolt.
For example, a standard M8 can be used to verify an M10 fine as both will be 1.25 pitch. Mesh the threads together and hold up to the light.
Having replaced a couple of these this week I can say that the rear ARB bracket nuts are a M8 coarse pitch. Luckily i had a big bag of them in the garage. Have a couple of spare bolts (and some good drill bits) ready when you take them off because it’s likely 1 or more will shear off when you undo them.
According to the Mazda parts list all the mk3 cars from 2005 to 2015 used the same flanged bolt on the front and rear rubber bush steel cover.

I always think twice about pulling them too much to loosen them as you say the stud can “let go”. Two options.
1) Put some heat in to the nut, there is a rubber bush there that does not help. I would replace the bushes if I was in there as they have a hard life.
2) Use a nut splitter but they can damage the stud if you are as ham fisted as I tend to be.
Plenty of wire brush cleaning and plusgas for a day or so before you remove the nuts.
I would go with the heat or be ultra careful with just plusgas and a wire brush.
As these are suspension components and are subject to vibration. I would use these nuts are they are higher strength.
