NC 2007 - Weird Electrical Issue

Hi all

My MX-5 won’t start!

It unlocks remotely (fine) but when I turn the key it makes a weird noise and the dials move. I have a video but I can’t see how I can add it to here (or what formats are accepted).

Any thoughts as to why this is happening and what can be done to sort it?

Sounds like a low battery possibly, with not enough charge to turn over the engine

I’m not sure it is. Take a look at the video. Seems to light up like a christmas tree so doubt it’s the battery.

Based on personal experience I’d say a flat, but not completely flat battery. The MX-5 NC does the dials dance in this situation.
If the battery is a recent replacement check it with a smart charger, as new batteries with faulty cells aren’t unknown (even with very reputable brands) and a quick check with a multimeter can fail to spot the problem if it doesn’t appear without a load on the battery. For an older battery it might be accidentally discharged or it could be failing to hold charge.

Charge the battery up and then put a multi meter on the battery terminals and see what it reads while cranking. Or get some jump leads to see if that gets the car going and then do the above.
