- My model of MX-5 is: NC PRHT 1.8 2011
- I’m based near: Bury St Edmunds
- I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on:
The Current Head Unit is a Pioneer AVIC-F710BT, which is not hooked to the steering wheel controls & does not support Apple Play. Has anyone recently replaced this head unit (direct replacement) with a unit which supports Apple Play & can interface with existing controls on the steering wheel?
I have been recommended a Pioneer SPH-DA360DAB, but not sure you can connect to steering wheel controls. Any suggestions will be welcomed.
Thank you for reading this post & any suggestions offered.
Steering wheel controls normally require an adaptor box with any aftermarket head unit.
Pick the head unit that does what you need.
Then get a connects2 adaptor loom with steering wheel control box included.
Something like this : Connects2 CTSMZ002 Mazda Steering Wheel Stalk Control Adaptor ...

I have an EONON Q04pro in my NC1 with the connects2 loom and the steering wheel controls work.
My NC1 came with a broken shoddy aftermarket HU, which I replaced with an Atoto A6PF. For a couple of hundred quid it’s probably one of the best android head units I’ve owned - better than most of the dodgy Chinese knock-offs.
Mine supports the steering wheel controls, though as the car already had an ISO harness I’m not sure if it had an extra connector for the SWC, though I did have to do a little bit of manual wire connecting to get it working.
Wireless android auto and carplay is definitely a worthwhile upgrade in these cars.

I’ve got the Pioneer SPH-DA360DAB head unit in my NC, it’s a good unit that supports Apple and Android. Like @CBRDEANO said you’ll need an adapter box to get the steering wheel controls to work but once it’s hooked up as per the instructions it works perfectly.

The DA77 is a newer, faster unit. I’d get that instead of the 360 as the DA77 can be found cheaper than the 360, strangely.
I used the Dynamic Sounds (non-Bose) kit for fitting:

Thank you for recommendation & I’m planning to install the Pioneer Unit DA77 unit. Before I start the process of taking out the old unit; how do you determine if a Bose amplifier is fitted?
Cheers
Paul
Your car, being a 1.8 won’t have a Bose amplifier.

I recently fitted a DA77 . It was pretty straightforward & has been a good upgrade. Im quite happy with the sq & features.
Robbie, many thanks for your clarification, much appreciated. Hope to see you at the Manger sometime.
DA77 purchased, will be fitting it soon. Thank you for your reply.
I hope you enjoy it! One word of wisdom. There is a fair amount of jiggery pokery getting everything in initially. Take your time & dont panic. I made a small scratch on the screen from contact with the threads on the gear stick. Advise put gear nob back on or similar during the fitting. You’ll see what I mean when you fit it

I did that too, cue lots of polishing to get the worst of the scratch out and then fitting a screen protector to hide (mostly) the rest of it

Take out the “centre speaker grille” (trim tool) this allows one to reach in and gently lift the head-unit’s loom forest to above the back of the chassis, no forcing required. A couple of strings can help as well.
And don’t forget to plug in the climate control. Not plugged in produces some very weird symptoms when the CANBUS becomes totally confuzzed by no CC termination.
