NC head unit upgrade apple CarPlay Pioneer

Been modifying my NC for about 10months now, may have to start a thread, the head unit this has been a brilliant upgrade.

Went with the pioneer SPH-DA77DAB, sounds amazing with the existing Bose speakers.

Went for Pioneer couple years back , great systems.

I routed my usb to cubby hole through the centre console.

I have the same unit in my NC3, pretty happy with the sound. I routed the usb to the centre console & wired in a cheap reverse camera- definitely worth the effort.

My only annoyance is I have been unable to find an OBD2 app that will work properly with android auto.

What are you trying to achieve with the OBD2 app and android auto ?

Hi I regularly use the Bluetooth OBD2 dongle connected to my phone to check for problems & monitor readings. I would like to have the option of those few real time pids & gauges for monitoring on the fly & on that 7” screen- just because it’s there really.

Of course an android head unit would have worked perfectly for that but I wasn’t very clued up about these things at the time

That’s a nice clean job.

I wanted to 3d print something for the hole to keep it looking OEM+

I don’t have reversing sensors, I do miss them.

I might add the reversing camera. How did you run the cable? Any tips?

I believe there are 2 main routing options for wiring here: someone will be along to correct me shortly

1): Camera mounted to boot lid then wired across underside of boot lid & through the grommet at the back. Then through the gap in the middle behind the centre console.

2): Mount camera above the number plate, then run wiring under the boot lining & through the gap behind passenger seat belt, then behind panels on passenger side to under centre console.

I went with 2nd option purely because it meant I didn’t have to modify the grommet in the back of the boot- my ham fisted style has taught me to live in fear of water leaks ( many have done it that way quite successfully, so don’t be put off by my prattlings).

Can you not view “Torque” through android auto if installed on your phone with an OBD dongle paired to the phone ?

Unfortunately torque ( excellent app btw) will not yet work on android 15 with AA. I think workarounds are being developed. I can get textual data through obd fusion, but it isn’t very intuitive when you are doing “ahem" real world testing :rofl:on private roads, of course.

That was part of my reason for installing an android based head unit.
Torque is installed and operated just like on the phone.

There is a Torque plugin for Android Auto. I have it on Android 16, I need to mess with it to suit what I want it to do.

Where did you route your mic? Did you use the existing Bose mic in the instrument cowl or stick a new one in the cowl (or elsewhere)?

Oh and what about the DAB aerial?

Thanks but I’m pretty sure that is the same work around I have tried. I can’t get it to work at all. Followed instructions to the letter, Am I missing something?

Have you tried this work around?

EDIT: As of 11th September 2025, there is a workaround/ solution that seems to work for a lot of people, me included. Deactivate the setting “force desktop mode” within the developer mode. did this for my FP5 and it has been working just fine since. If you still have soft reset issues on your FP with Android Auto since your Android 15 update (wired/wireless) - give it a try!

What did you do with the old Bose radio?

Boxed up in storage, are you looking for a head unit?

Whilst mine is still in good Nick, it is the non Bose version. Just wondering if it’s worth upgrading

The BOSE head unit also requires the amp from the rear to make it work and the matching speakers.

I’ve got the same head unit and the mic sits on top of the steering column just under the trip computer on the instrument cluster
