As Deano points out , lack of oil = problems, which is across the board regardless of manufacturer I guess. It’s down to you test driving , history checks , a good ear or take a member of the mechanical craft along with you for input.

I sold my NC 2 litre for the ND two years ago with 108,000 miles on the clock, together with 15 annual services. As the guys above have said, it is all down to correct maintenance and keeping that oil level as it should be. A true MX-5 enthusiast will always do this as they treasure their cars.

Treat the max mark on the dipstick as min. If the oil gets down to the min mark you may be too late.

I’ve owned a 2014 NC 2 litre for 4 years and never had any problems with it whatsoever. Drives like a dream. When I was researching it before purchase it didn’t raise any flags about reliability.

It is the same as the 1.8. I’ve known of engine failure on the 1.8.

Mine has been sweet as. Never uses any oil. It does appear though that some engines can be more critical of a lack of oil for a period of time. If you keep an eye on it,it shouldn’t be a problem.
