It’s a pity the issue hasn’t corrospnded with an MOT or service etc, at least then you could ask them to check it out while your there (diagnose it). Most places are fair and it don’t take much for someone to look whilst it’s in for a service or something.
Thanks for documenting your experience. Hope the extended warrenty covers it for you. Not only is your account helpful to others, but the fact that the extended warrenty might be involved (if diagnosis leads to the hubs), the worth-or otherwise- of the extended warrenty will be tested and again may help others further down the line.
Isn’t that exactly what a routine service involves, inspecting various components for serviceability? You shouldn’t have to ask them to check, it’s what your paying for.
Yeah I hope it helps others. Seems a common issue. I have options because of this forum; people are helping me in pm’s.
My main concern is actually safety. I mean is it safe to drive with this issue? It does make you wonder.
I am going to get BBR to look at it.
It is very strange the Mazda local dealer cannot just tell me if the part is covered under the warranty. Then everything is clear this way. Why go to the trouble of getting the car in and checking everything and then determining whether you can cover it? I find that strange a bit, lol.
They’ve got to diagnose it (the costs of which are often a source of contention), as if it was under manufacturer warranty, they couldn’t just assume what’s wrong with it via guessing, or going by a customer’s opinion, as after all, the manufacturer has got to ‘approve’ (or not) a warranty repair, and they’re only going to do that after a diagnosis. Same deal if it was an out of warrenty issue which a customer was hoping/trying for some sort of good will help.
The ‘extended warranty’ is really an aftermarket one. It’s underwritten by a third party. So the same procedure will occur, but it’ll be the warranty company giving the nay/yay, not Mazda.
The dealer can’t give a direct answer as, in fairness to them, they can only diagnose it (as stated, costs of which are a topic for another day), and do a repair if authorised to do so by the warranty company. It’s not ‘up to them’ whether it gets done or not, or I suppose second guess if a warranty company are going to approve or not.
Yes, some MX5ers make life, career, family and house purchase decisions based on how close will they be to Rodders, so if you’re around the corner, go there if the warranty don’t come up trumps.
Thanks for that. Seems like I need to get into touch with the third-party warranty company then. I have received emails from them for some other issue.
They may say wait for a diagnosis assessment, as only then will the issue be documented in full by the dealer, who’ll (should?) liaise with the extended warrenty guys.
For what it’s worth I actually took that same warrenty out in my first year post manufacture warranty, and when I was weighting it up, I asked the service guy what are they like, and he said they’re generally good. Fortunately I didn’t have to claim in the year I had it, and haven’t bothered since as I only do about 1-1.5K miles a year and didn’t want to repeatedly shell out the annual £350 or so it cost.
Good point. Let us see. I will update here what happens regardless.
Yeah I don’t think I will extend the warranty either. I am going to get modifications done too so it won’t cover those things…plus like you say the extensions are expensive. 1-1.5k miles seems very low. You drive something better?
Luckily I’ve a run around which is a boy racer version of a Juke (nismo rs), and a NISSAN Elgrand which I primarily use for overnight ‘camps’ with the dog. So I’m fortunate in that I get to pick when I drive my ND. It wasn’t always like that, in the first two years we were a usual ‘two car family’, the Mrs having hers, me having mine. Again though, I was still fussy about when I drove it, even though I did more miles.
The head and common sense says I should really sell the ND and Nismo, and get something like an i20 N, which still would give 90% of the fun, but common sense in head/heart stuff isn’t so straightforward.
No, and I’ve looked after my ND with almost illness-like focus, and it feels like a mate. I know that sounds cringe worthy, but I don’t think I could sell it to someone.
I don’t think I’d also buy an i20 N used, as I don’t like shelling out that sort of £ for something which isn’t pre reg (or new, but they’ve binned making the petrol Ncars now), and not meaning to stereotype, but I wouldn’t trust how an i20 N was used in its miles, if I bought used. and didn’t know the prior owner.
