I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: __Gearbox noises considered normal?
Once warm, I hear 3 ‘characteristics’ from the gearbox
Particularly when driving past noise-reflective surfaces, like walls, sometimes I can hear an almost turbine-like whine in 3rd and less so in 4th gears
When the clutch is released in neutral I sometimes hear a ‘chatter’ which goes away when I depress the clutch, like it’s a bit lose on its splines or the DMF is rattling
Sometimes when the clutch is released in neutral I hear a quietish wirring bearing-like noise which I can hear slow down an stop when I depress the clutch
I know the cars aren’t designed to insulate normal mechanical sounds but are these considered normal/typical or worthy of further investigation? Car’s done 12000m
What year car. Apparently some 2023/4 cars have proven to have dodgy gearboxes. A bad batch. One of our members has just had his gearbox changed under warrantee by Mazda. Difficulty in engaging 3rd gear whilst changing up and down.
Certainly 2.
So much so I asked and sat in the cars of don’t know how many people in supermarket carparks, asking/checking if theirs did the same. Everyone (about 4) did, and the one which didn’t may have been as she was parked more near the main road and there was more background noise. I checked a practically new one at a dealership, which also did the same.
Mine had done that (iirc) since I had it, and it’s exactly the same (ND1 btw)
The NC did the same and their was a TSB for it, basically saying it’s nothing.
Well, mine has done that idle clutch down stop noise, clutch up noise for nearly 8 years and is no different in that time. Same deal in many an ND in real life (as described above) I tried after listening to internet paranoia. Reading this earlier I asked ANOTHER person in Tesco carpark if he could try his (3k miles, 24 pate Exclusive line!). Bingo, did it too. There also was a TSB for the NC, when similar users also might have thought the sky was falling in too. TSB said it’s fine.
I admit that more whining sound when pushing the accelerator sounds different to mine though.
Still though, if they’re getting you a new gearbox etc. Says it all mind, even the supposed bullet proof ND2 V5 box isn’t really that. Saying that, I think the ‘glory’ ND2 boxes were '19-'21. Yours of course is later than that.
Sorry to hear that, if its any consolation my v1 gearbox was replaced by Mazda with a v5 at 10.5k, the car is going strong (despite now having a lot more power) without issue at ~24k.
They said it wasn’t going into gear well (though I have to say it seemed fine to me - maybe new one will better?!) but also that gearbox oil was black and had swarf/bits in it. So def knackered. Symptoms mainly my point 3 and the video.
13,000 miles certainly not tracked or similar by me (since about 4500 miles).
Yes, not the best, 13k miles. Appalling really on a '23 plate car, 8 years into production.
Best wishes with the new one. I’m sure that’s your fill of back luck done and it’ll be fine.
