ND - universal bonnet vents (to match taste)

Open discussion - no wrong answers. only personal tastes

So my next area of key focus on the ND is going to be working more on the aero elements. Front downforce. Rear downforce. Drag.

Lets focus on the bonnet for this
For the ND there are 4 ‘main’ (see as - most popular) ways of getting vents in he bonnet: Verus, Singular, (both cut holes in your bonnet), or ChargeSpeed and Carbon Miata whom offer full bonnets with built in vents.

the whole bonnets - bloody expensive! and wont even be bodywork colour! (im looking for subtle).

but, for my taste i dont like the Verus and the Singular. they look too big, wrong angles. ‘blocky’. they are both very functional products. i get that. but ive got to look at it every day

im thinking - of grabbing universal ones and cutting in holes to accomodate.
what i really like are the F-type vents.

*lets be honest, both the Verus and the Singular units are also universal really. they just run some flow data to ensure they are mounted in the right place.

a couple of AI image generators, kind of captured what im thinking. but not perfect.

also… i hadnt realised just how many variations Jag did!
these ones are what i had in mind as ‘tasteful’. slender, subtle. (2016 V6 model this one).

couple of images of the Singular and the Verus. I just dont think these suit.

what do you guys think?

in my wisdom of googling…  i have found out why i dont like the Verus and Singular, its a simple trait:

all of these, to my eyes, are ‘good looking’ and look as though they are meant to be fitted to that bonnet. the key difference between these styles and the ND ones - its the center line! all of these have a near vertical line from windscreen to bumper, with the outer edges being curved.
the verus and singular seem to try to link A-pillars to Badge.

The Verus and Singular one are angled to follow the airflow over the bonnet. Personally I still like the Verus ones even though I could have used alternatives. Their size and placement are fine to my eye.

yea i appreciate its all personal taste

understood, the singular and verus are the only one s( i know of) to have real functonal airflow data behind them. so would make sense they should look similar. the design must do really well promoting air extraction.
what im not sure on is the underside. i had considered that perhaps the exoskeleton of the bonnet skin underneath may also mean the vents need to logically follow a certain shape?

No, not at all as the picture shows

Personally I’m not a fan of aftermarket bonnet vents but if you have a functional goal then I get it. If it were me I’d want to make as much of the vent body colour as possible without compromising its function. Some of the F Type vents seem to have achieved this, e.g. below pulled from an eBay listing:

yep that works for me
due to the glossy black all over the ND on the aero bits, i had thought that may work best (also for cost). but body colour code for something like this ^ yes i like this  i like subtle.

subtle old school

I’ve got the Verus to go on mine, I agree they aren’t particularly aesthetically pleasing but my car at this point is more about function and driver than its appearance.

yea know the feeling
I had thought of colour coding the verus panels (to the crystal grey colour of mine), but i think it will look a bit odd being that large.

Of all of the designs shown so far the first two look to be the most visually appealing options to my eyes.

the AI generated ones?

well ive got something coming in the post today… some cheap ebay vents. im going to move them around and get some pics to see if i like various placements. will share pics

Ok poll time then
just got a some cheap plastic from amazon to place on the bonnet and get a feel. note these wouldnt be the actual product, but just an indication of actual size (and similar shape).

What are you venting? Have you thought about a single offset vent? All these symmetrical approaches seem to lack the right proportions and fight with the design of the car (IMO) but I can’t put my finger on the reason(s).

Edit: e.g. maybe a single offset vent and try to tie it in with the trajectory of the existing bonnet crease (left or right).

could try asymmetric, hadnt thought of that.

what am i trying to do? - increase a little downforce (by way of giving the engine bay pressure somewhere to go) and to aid the cooling of the 'bay to help with intake temps.
now if i wanted to do this ‘‘properly’’ as in function was everything. then answer is take the Verus or Singular.
but its just not to my taste/liking. soi need to reduce the function dial and increase the ‘fashion’ dial.

proper well designed vents dont just need placing in the correct position, but also the desgn of the louvres, wicks, and even how far they protrude out of the engine bay all makes a difference. the sort im looking to fit are (function wise) probably inbetween ‘vents to nowhere’ and ‘oem minimum requirement’. im far behind anything race-spec.

…and now re-considering your asymetric comment… i could install one above the open air intake. that would be an interesting placement… i know from @BlueAgave that the intakes me have overlap with the Verus. hes got a good pic somewhere of this
water ingress wouldnt be an issue then, as theres nothing electronic there to get wet.

might be too low, and too close to the bonnet crease though. would be somewhere here i think…

It’s stopped being a ‘sleeper’ with OEM (ish) looks then?

Certainly doesn’t sound OEM

I’m curious how the slogan ends on that van in the top right corner :grimacing:

well there may be a spoiler coming soon  that may give things away…
i wont mention the neons then lol.

i think the Reverie ones are my fav design that i can find. but would have to spray them, i dont want CF. but i can find a single image anywhere online of someone who has these fitted, so cant get it in my minds eye.

or go for the cheaper '2nd hand jag ones. i think this design is good. but getting placement right may be a bit tricky to suit the ND bonnet.

The vents have to be placed where the low pressure area is on the bonnet for maximum efficiency unless it’s a case of form over function.

I voted OEM.
imo, all of the pics showing the other looks look minging.
