Nearly new ND buying advice questions?

I don’t know if you can give general advice Dan, or tell us how it works, but I had a shock when I bought my Mk4 8 + years ago. I’d actually had a Mk2 for 6 years before that as well as my main car with about 20 years without a claim. I think \i was paying about £100 a year for Classic insurance on the Mk2.

I had a quote from Mazda insurance for the 1.5 Mk4 of over £700, supposedly because I had no transferable NCD. By shopping around I got £450 or so but I still felt ripped off.

I still have the 1.5, and pay about £200 with More Than. I also just bought a Subaru BRZ, again I have no transferable NCD and I expected another wallet-emptying experience. Amazingly I found a 5* policy right off the bat for about £300, again with no NCD. Have insurers got better at identifying risk, or have they started taking experience with other cars into account? What is the best way of approaching insurance for an additional “hobby car” owner buying a newish MX-5? Is this a circumstance in which using a broker is really worthwhile?

I had in mind to try AF but I got the quote with a 6 hour deadline and banked it.

If not factory-fitted they are a modification. So even if the dealer fits them before delivery they are still a modification. My previous MX-5, an NC had them dealer-fitted and one insurance company declined to quote, another upped the premium.

After a brief experience with a cheap (rusty) NC3 2008 last year. We recently purchased a pre-reg 75 plate with only 5 miles on it (registered after 01.09.26) MX-5 ND soft top discovered after some research looking at older cars that it was worth spending a bit more for this one with the new Mazda 6 year/100,000 mile warranty …put a 6 year Mazda service plan on it as well…plus got the underside sealed (in black) only two weeks ago with Rustec. As we’re looking to keep this car long term. When i attempted to ask Mazda dealers if there was any downside to undersealing …they said no issues or problems with the warranty…the issue is that you’ll never get the manufacturer (in this case Mazda) in the UK to put anything in writing to this effect, as I think legally it can cause them some pain if anything were to go wrong …although I cannot see what could go wrong as long as it’s professionally done by a company that know what they’re doing e.g. they correctly mask off areas where seals and/or components maybe affected by the undersea product that is applied…

Any modification that is not standard from the factory you need to inform your insurance company , even though they are Mazda springs
