Hi
Can anyone please advise us, I think we need new shocks for our 2000 mk2 1.8. What would we expect to pay for someone to fit these locally ( Tyneside area plaese) and can anyone recommend a make of shock absorbers.
Cheers

Why do you think you need new ones? Are they leaking or do they have excessive play?
Can you wait until the next tech day in May? It is a job we could do then. Only the £5 subs to pay on the day, you bring the parts and we have the tools.
Shocks are available from www.mx5parts.co.uk
It’s a shame you missed the tech day on the 7th February.
Hi Halli
Thanks for your the offer, I’ll tell the missus to get her overalls ready, bet she can’t wait to start.
Seriously though I think the shocks have been on since new and I thought after this length of time they would need replacing, i.e. went over a few “bumps” today and nearly shook me fillings out ( she said not thta bad), ycan you advise?
Cheers

My rear shocks are the original Bilsteins. My car is a 1990 Roadster.
I recently changed the fronts as they had developed a leak. I put lowering springs on the car at the same time as the front springs had cracked on the ends of the coils.
If there are no visible leaks then I expect your shocks are OK. It is a sports car and therefore does have a harder ride than most “shopping trolley” cars. If you fancy a firm ride, you should come for a ride in my car when I’ve got the 17" wheels on!!
Take your car to a few garages and ask them to give you an opinion on the shocks. I expect they will say they are ok.
If you really want to change the shocks, then you probably could wait until the tech day then we can all muck in and swap them out for you.
Try this. Put as much of your weight on the body panel above each shock absorber, one at a time of course, with both hands and when you have compressed the shocker remove your weight from the panel. The body panel should “bounce” up above it’s normal level once only and then settle down to it’s normal level. If it does this they are more likely than not to be OK. My car like halli’s is a hard ride too and my shockers are still OK after 140,000Km .
Thanks guys for your technical expertise, will tell the wife to put her overalls back in the cupboard[:|, it seems I was a little hasty, shocks should be ok. Will have to spend our hard earned cash on something else, maybe a typhoon induction kit[:D].
Once again many thanks for your advice.
