New tyres for 1991 MX5

Hi, after much trawling and searching of the old forum, this forum and tyre quote websites it is evident that people recommend Toyo T1Rs, Goodyear Eagle F1s or Bridgestone SO2s. I would like to get some T1Rs fitted, but not being financially flush I don’t think that is going to be possible. Is there ANY recommendations for slightly cheaper tyres. The quote I have seen for fully-fitted 4 x T1Rs is £266.68 on Blackcircles.com.
I’ve checked Mytyres, tyrefitdirect and camskill but they are more expensive.
I am looking for a tyre that is as safe as possible in the wet. I had an accident last year because my budget tyres couldn’t cope with the wet (on a gradient). Is there anything mid-range that is reliable, or that anyone can recommend? I don’t drive like a twit, I just want to drive my car around bends without feeling that it’s going to slide into a nice big hedge, or worse - down a cliff. My budget is below £200.
Thanks.

I’d shop around. My local dealer (in the Southampton area) supplied a Toyo TR1 earlier this year for £54 fitted. It took me a couple of calls to find somewhere that did them but was definitely worth the effort

what size tyres do you need?

195/50/15 T1-R £190 for 4 fitted, balanced and inc VAT

Eagle F1s, no question. The best tyre you can get in this size, and you’ll be able to get them fitted for between £45 and £50 each if you shop around. My local place does them for £47 each inc. [:)]

yep £205 fitted

Get them. Worth it over the T1s

Ebay is your friend. I recently got 4 Toyo Proxes T1R 195/50/15 for £117 delivered. £30 for fitting and balencing at a local independant tyre fitter (the big names don’t/won’t fit other peoples tyres) seems an absolute bargain to me.

My tyres were delivered promptly and were bought via a buy it now price rather than an auction.

You could try this web site http://www.tyreplus.co.uk/home.asp  and see what they come up with for tyre dealers in your area. You print off the online quote and take it with you and you will get them for that price which is always cheaper than a quote obtained over the phone.

Thanks for your help. I guess the tyres I am looking for are 195/50/15. There is a few listed on eBay for a reasonable price. I shall phone around my local garages to find the best deal fitter. Oh poo, I’ll need new wheels too won’t I. Why did I only just think of that! My wheels are 14s.195/55/14s??

Thanks for your help. I have ordered 195/55/14 Toyo T1-Rs from valuetyres.co.uk. Cost £58.55 per tyre fully fitted. Luckily one of their fitting centres is literally just up the road from my very rural home! Has anyone else used this website? Went over £200 but not by much so quite happy with this.
