Greetings all,
Thought I’d say hello and introduce myself and my gorgeous car (I like it anyway - though I am only 3 years older than it).
Anywho - I’m Adam from Poole, Dorset.
Plan to do a few subtle “improvements” to the Eunos over the coming paydays!
MK3 Stubby Aerial
New radio and speakers - still factory fitted at the moment - is this any good? http://www.mx5parts.co.uk/product_info.php/products_id/619
MPH conversion dial - just got a authentic dial for £8 - beats £24.97 I saw elsewhere!
Central locking (though having extensively researched it on Mx5parts.co.uk it looks horribly complicated)
Decent alarm/immobiliser - has a Toad alarm that doesn't work and the immobiliser is plug-type thing you have to stick in a hole until a light goes green.
Plan to get Mazda MX5 (Eunos) Enthusiast's Workshop Manual 1.6ltr By Rod Grainger & Pete Shoemark too as I've been told it better than Haynes (can anyone confirm or deny?)
If anyone is looking at that and thinking "No man! What are you doing?!" please feel free to offer alternative advice, it don't want it "Max Powered" but just want to utilise what is there already without turning it into something grotesque.
Would love to be able to reasonably maintain it too without having to take it to a garage for simple jobs so if anyone local fancies showing me the basics of maintenance I would be grateful.
Anyway - that's me.
Until next time.... [:)]
I would agree on the Rods manual being more useful than Haynes (there are a few on Ebay now). Personaly i have both as the Haynes has the wiring diagrams.
As to your intended mods, it`s your car improve it how you want. But why anyone would spend money on central locking for a 2 door car has always baffled me…not exactly hard to reach over & unlock the passenger door is it? lol
Anyway thats my valuable input for now lol Enjoy your car. I`m sure you will get plenty of help & advice when needed here.
As far as central locking goes it was more for a piece of mind thing knowing that you can hit a button and know it’s secure… Though might just be me being lazy too
Be careful! Its an easy habit to start. In the beginning you think “Its ok, I just do the odd mod here and there, Its not like I NEED to do it”. But soon, The sticky on chrome interia bits don’t do it for you anymore. You move on to harder mods, A set of wheels here, Some lexus lights there. Before you realize where you are your working double shifts back to back on a sunday just to get your fix of low level quad headlights and intercooled turbo kits… So please, Be careful. It doesn’t help that you’ve gone and got yourself a MK1 (one of the most personalizable cars on the planet). Just don’t do anything silly, Like going to MX5parts.co.uk or mx5nutz.com without first handing your credit card over to a responsible adult for safe keeping. If you just look at some of the members cars on here, You’ll realize that its easy to become a modoholic. Anyway, Have fun with the new toy, And when the heathens taunt you with “Its a hairdressers car”, Just get them in the passenger seat , Find some twisty roads and make them beg for you to slow down*! It works for me
Obviously, Only where it’s safe to do so and without violating any driving laws. (The last thing I want is someone saying “But reman told me to do it officer”)
nice choice of coulour and spec be warned once you start doing mods it can be adictive but for anything you need to know just post the questions and somebody will reply normally geoff is good enjoy
I hear what you’re saying about getting addicted to mods… must admit when I was on MX5parts.co.uk I was tempted by alot of stuff but I quite like the car how it is at the moment… hopefully it’ll stay like that!
Thanks for all the welcomes and compliments on the car - not bad for £800 [:)]
Quick question to anyone out there, what oil is best used on my 5?
Absolutely nothing wrong with it, the soft-top is in impeccable condition, got all the service history, all part receipts (prev owner paid £120 to have a cigarette lighter fitted!)
No scrapes, dings, or scratches…
Passed every mot I have the paperwork for, only advisories have been replacing number plate and a tyre…
The guy I bought it from wanted shot as he was moving, had it as a “Buy it now” on eBay for £1400 didn’t get sold so stuck it in classifieds for £900 I gave him £800 - now it’s mine [:D]
I thought I got a bargain too, glad someone else agrees!
Well, Everyone says the best mod is a 4 wheel alignment check. I seem to remember talk of it being around the 100 quid mark. I haven’t bothered yet but as soon as I get around to putting on my suspension kit, Its the first thing I’ll do… I’m expecting big things as most people on here get evangelical about the improvements (And best of all, You don’t even have to inform the insurance company.)
You can’t do it yourself - it has to be done at a specialist like Wheels in Motion on a big computerised lifter thing with laser gizmos!
Easily the best £100 you can (and should) spend on an MX-5 - it is not like normal tracking /alignment at Kwik Fit etc - the MX-5 has three-way movement in its suspension set up (toe/camber er… another one) and because of the perfect chassis of the car and the direct ‘feel’ of the steering, the handling of the car is very sensitive to having the ‘geometry’ alignment set up just right. Before I had mine done the car felt a bit wandering and nervous at high speed, and a bit vague on corners with a tendency to lock on left ns wheel when hard braking. Afterwards it felt tight and responsive and very very secure - it responded in the way I wanted it to. Ah see now I am one of those sounding evangelical! ha ha Best simple mods I did to my Mk1 that I never regretted:
Full geometric alignment £100
New recommended tyres (Toyos very popular here) - you will soon find out how the wrong tyre choice acts in the wet or ice! I was sliding all over on mismatched Yokos and the car improved 100% when I switched to Toyos £200 or so
Classic windblocker - sounds noncy but means you pretty much never have to have the roof up againapart from rain - seriously cuts down wind and noise in cabin - got mine £70 on Ebay I think
Get those or even just first two done and spend the change if any on petrol and getting out and having fun!
Thank you for the advice, I will certainly get it booked in for an alignment adjustment, are there any garage chains that do this, I.E. Nationwide Auto Centres, HiQ etc? Failing that does anyone know a garage in Poole/Bournemouth that do it?
Will also get myself on BlackCircles to look for some decent Toyo’s…
Will any old decent-looking windblocker do the job or should I be looking at something in particular?
