I called Lancaster Insurance today and was quoted over £1,000. I told them I was a member. Using Money Supermarket I found a quote of £160. When I followed it up worked out to £240 as I don’t want to transfer my no claims from my daily drive. So i have zero years of no claims for the soon to be picked up 5.
Just thought I would mention it . Might be because I mentioned driving it for work and personal use? I was asking for cover to be 5,000 miles over a year.
Even at £240 it’s a good deal with zero no claims discount. That in itself says NCD is a bit of a farce, I’ve got loads of years with no claims, they even matched that of the other car I have, it still doesn’t bring the price down much. Same as limited mileage, I had 5k miles limit on each car (different companies) I upped them both to 8k, the quotes didn’t alter.
Im 26 , 2500miles a year , pleasure only and that was with lancaster at £332 a year i found having a chat over the phone and changine my job role to what was more realistic than the selections on there website and also the ecsess helped get mine down alot im hoping this may help you too
When you think of the type of car we’re driving and the fun factor involved i think most insurance quotes are incredibly low. £332 for a 26 year old sounds a bit of a bargain to me.
Appreciate you sharing your perspective. The OC definitely isn’t a ‘one size fits all’ and it’s clear the current structure hasn’t worked out for you.
It’s a shame if you felt pushed back when raising these points before—healthy clubs should be able to handle a bit of honest feedback about their value proposition.
Insurance is notorious for varying, the "OC insurance isn’t always going to be the cheapest for everyone, it’s value proposition goes beyond that offering the items below which generally don’t feature in most policies.
Unlimited and Limited mileage cover available
Free member to member cover – drive another club member’s MX-5 with fully comprehensive cover
Free agreed value
Free salvage retention – in the event of a total loss, we will pay the full agreed value for the vehicle and you may retain the salvage free of charge
In my experience, be careful when you are led to assume that your fully comprehensive cover ( in the UK ), is also automatically extended to cover use of the car whilst driving in the EU.
I have been searching the various comparison sites over the last weekend in order to renew my policy at the end of April, and many “fully comprehensive policies” default to “the minimum required whilst abroad” - meaning your fully comprehensive policy becomes a third party policy if you’re driving in the EU, in many cases.
After extensive searches I eventually bought a policy for my 2010 NC @ £225, but on reading the policy booklet (received on the app) I found the information on “foreign use” was so vague and badly worded that I thought I’d made a big mistake and inadvertently ended up with the wrong policy (for me). Obviously this won’t matter to everyone.
So, I phoned the company seeking advice and clarification and to be fair, they were very helpful and confirmed that I do indeed have 90 days fully comprehensive cover in the EU, included in my new policy. Despite being assured that all phone calls are recorded and thus this oral confirmation would suffice, I requested a confirmatory letter to this effect, which I have now received, via the insurance company app. Helpful, courteous staff, always helps.
Comparison sites are undoubtedly extremely useful- but some things just need you to talk to a human. For many, many years I used a local insurance broker across the road from my place of work- and they dealt with all this, in a friendly decent manner. Even lent me an RX8 for my daughter’s wedding, and my wife drove the bridesmaids whilst my daughter and I took the NC.
Well just driven mine for the 1st time. Took a daughter out for lunch. Then drove from Shropshire to Warwickshire. Some empty s bends near the end, ■■■ i have found the smile that the forum talks of! The grip is superb and the overall ride is so smooth. My expectations were for feeling the bumps more. I am Artemis II right now….over the moon! She has come with Pilot 3s so no need to spend there. Just needs aircon doing and the Err solving on the head unit.
Quoted £220 with P James for 2,000pa. Paid £103 with Be Wiser, underwritten by the same company that used to cover the car previously with Adrian Flux. And a £15 reward/kickback from Moneysupermarket.
