Newbie with an electrical problem

Firstly hello to everyone, this is my first post on this forum having just acquired my first MX5 (a Eunos 1.8 S Ltd I believe). I can now see what all the fuss is about and I have just come from 4 years of Caterham ownerhship and am currently restoring a 1970 Lotus Elan[:D]

However my 1993 car has an infuriating electrical problem which I simply cannot get to the bottom of.

The 15amp fuse which protects the dash instruments and indicators keeps blowing. It may be okay for a couple of days or just an hour but there is no pattern to it such as operating the indicators or going over a bump. It just happens quite inexplicably and is a major PITA.

I have checked all the obvious things like the dash loom and instrument panel (had it out), indicator switches, lamp clusters etc and there is no obvious sign of chafing or other signs of shorting. Also checked the front and rear O2 sensors but all appear okay.

Can anyone suggest what to do next.[:S]

Many thanks.

G’day mate, welcome to the Forum

Have a look here for circuit diags

http://www.madracki.com/miata/images/wiring/93diag.pdf and here for fuse layouts and locations

http://www.mx5oc.co.uk/forum/forums/t/180.aspx

The drawing shows that the power to the combination switch [headlight, flashers etc], Rev light, power aerial, warning buzzer and instruments all come off the meter fuse, which should be 10amp…good luck, let’s know how you get on

 Cheers Geoff,

Those diagrams look a bit scary[:S]

Oddly there was a 15amp fuse in there which appeared to be orginal so I have just been replacing it with a 15 - I wonder if the previous owner has put in a higher rated fuse to try and solve the problem?

Equally odd is that the fuse seems only to control dash instruments and indicators. The lights, wipers and all other functions continue to work when the fuse pops.

I am guessing an itermittent short but where to start trying to find it?[:(]

Really annoying as Spring seems to have sprung on this side of the world
