My mazda has not been used for several months, and when i tried to start it the starter just clicked and the dash lights went out. I then put the battery on charge and when i plugged the charger in, i heard a pop from the engine bay area. Does anyone know what this might have been? I am guessing it might be a fuse that has blown, but have checked them and cant find any that have blown. The only thing i did realise is that i hadnt turned the ignition off before i connected the battery up. Is this likely to be the route of the problem?
If the battery was very flat, the “pop” sound might just have been a relay energising when the volts came up. Aside from having heard a popping sound, do you actually now have a problem?
What have you tried since? Did you turn the ignition off and continue charging the battery? Are you confident you didn’t connect the charger the wrong way round?
Battery charger was connected the right way round. The problem i now have is that the battery wont charge and the ignition will no longer turn on at all. When i connected my old battery charger to see if that made a difference the battery charger dial shot straight to number 6 and the charger started buzzing.
Check carefully the main fuse in the fusebox under the bonnet, its the one bolted into place by two 6mm bolts (disconnect the battery before removing the bolts). I’ve seen this fuse pop a couple of times after a car has been jump started.
After checking Ralphs fuse, what sort of battery do you have. If it’s a Panasonic original, they don’t like the old fashioned battery chargers. They ned a slow low current chareg over a couple of days with something like an Optimate charger. The battery needs to be off the car at this stage, if it’s a wet battery make sure it has the correct fluid level before charging. The amp meter on the charger going to 6 and the charger rattling is a sign that the battery is dead flat and the charger is going flat out to charge the battery.
Which main fuse box do you mean? as i think i may have missed this one. I was aware there are 2. One of them located under the bonnet on the drivers side and is opened by releasing the plastic clip, the other is located under the drivers footwell and also opened by releasing the plastic clip.
Am a missing another important fuse box or just getting confused with what you are saying?
