No movement in piston when hex key turned

  1. My model of MX-5 is: mk1
Hi all, in changing rear brake discs and pads on my na, I’ve found that neither of my caliper pistons wind in or out when the adjustment hex keys are turned. It doesn’t feel like the key is stripped, can feel end stops to the rotation both ways. One of my pads was slightly binding and I’m guessing this was the cause. Does anyone know if there is a common cause for this? Would rotating the piston itself manually wind it back, or more likely break the mechanism further? Thanks in advance!

They hex key will easily remove from the caliper to check the splines. Use the hex key to ‘drag’ it out. Don’t turn the piston. It could be that the internals have pulled out of the piston, if you wind fully anti-clockwise to the stop, will the piston push back? Could be that the piston is seized in the body.
