Since fitting my JR if have seen no change in oil consumption, I use Mobil 1 fully synthetic in 5w 50. A puff of smoke is quite often the result of a little blow by at the piston rings. Do a compression check, all the readings should be somewhere around the 180-195 psi mark. If the piston rings are doing the job, oil cannot be sucked up into the combustion chambers. The other possibility, although I am not aware of an instance causing smoke when running is a leak past the valve stem seals. Check for this at the compression test.

My 190,000 mile, supercharged 1.8 uses about 1 litre of oil in 1,500 miles, but it doesn’t seem to matter at all how I drive. 4 litres in a week is an awfully large volume of oil. It’s hard to imagine any way of achieving that. I suppose if the PCV valve was stuck open it might manage to suck a lot of oil vapour out of the crankcase, but 4 litres??? I have heard that if you’re running much too rich, the excess fuel can cause “bore wash”, stripping the cylinder walls of oil and causing the rings to wear and leak, but I don’t have any experience to back that up.
Indeed 110k turbocharged car here and i can’t even see how you could use 4 litres in a week… mine was just above the L mark last weekend for me (eek) but to be fair i hadn’t checked it since november (maybe even october) and then it was in the middle of the dip stick…so to use that in a week I’d definitely say it’s compression test time.
Ditto; I changed the engine after a mere 180k kms, after the oil smoke became embarrassing (cold start, pklume of smoke). But the engine drove fine. Idle was fine, power was fine, fuel consumption brilliant, and, after I changed the cat, emissions were ok. But the rest of it was knackered. Loads of oil being pulled through the PCV, but not 4 liters worth. It used to fill a fuel filter in a week (what I used as a gash catch can). I guess by the end I was using 2 liters every 1000 miles.
We pulled the head off; the rings looked suspect in one cylinder. The cylinderhead lived on in another car, and I gather the valves were pretty crudded as well. Maybe a combination of things.
Have you checked the pcv in the breather, it may be pressurising the crankcase if leaking
cheers guys, will check your recommendations out.
Have rechecked this thread and apologies, it wasnt 4litres! It was 1litres, hit the wrong key! Currently I have 10-40 oil and it a month of hard driving to test have used about 1/2 litre so seems to be ok, cheers. Unless any more posts moderator I’m happy to close this one thanks.
