Oh no ! - Heard Water Sloshing In Passenger sill!

Well I have no idea how to get this water out.  Just noticed it today after the snow and frost, sounds like a lot of water.  What do I need to do?  Do I need to poke the drain holes under the sill,  bearing in mind I have no garage and my car is on a slight slope down on the passenger side, my car is on cobbles?  Where does this water come from? I dried my boot out and found no leaks a week ago and  now the condensation has reappeared but very light condensation not heavy like last time.

Follow this link. It tells all.

This should also help with the condensation.

My drain holes were cleared out in june when I had mazmania roof fitted.  Surely it can’t be blocked up already.  I have no flexible curtain rod to push up from the bottom, would a hose fit up the hole from the bottom? So when I push up should all the water flow out?

Short answer is yes it can and yes it should.  It’s the ones in the sill you should be focussing on - what sort of hose are you thinking of?  Holes are around 5-10mm dia (guess) so much smaller than a garden hose, what you need if you don’t have curtain rod is something like earth wire out of mains cable (cable, not the flexible leads you use in the house - the sort of stuff that gets buried in the walls) - slim, flexible and soft(ish).

Poke some of that up yer holes and see what comes out.
 Fnar fnar fnar fnurk …
Also don’t forget that the water needs to be at the same end of the
sill as the holes when you do this - parking on a slope can make the
exercise pointless…

I had water in my sills. I poked a curtain wire done the drain holes from the roof gutters at the top by the seat belt mounts and took a swiss army knife to the drain holes in the sills.
When I jiggled a swiss army knife blade in the sill drain holes I got a very wet hand and no more slushing of water has been heard since!

When you have drained the water out of the sills, drill a 3mm hole in all of the eight drain places, ie two on each sill drainage area.

Sound plan, but she did say she has no garage, and therefore I assume no real means of lifting the car up to get a drill underneath…  If you put your feet under the sides of my car, you won’t be able to lift your toes up very far at all, so I’m assuming drilling out Traceys drain holes without a ramp / hoist is out of the question…

Ima bit worried about that suggestion - will you not then be letting the rust monster in to this area?

I had a go, I found at the front of the rear passenger wheel a rubber sort of slant shaped tube,  It came off a bit so I pushed it back on.  I tried a pencil, a old thin vegetable knife that slid up but nothing but tiny amount of mud came out.  I have no wire long enough to push down from the roof top, no curtain wire or anything.  All the lead wires I have are aerial wire with connectors on end.  Just can’t find anything that is stiff enough to push down.  I could not find a hole at the front wheel end either.  All I could do was kneel on the kerb and feel around.

this is how my car is parked.

Tracey
did you read the stuff at this link
http://www.mx5oc.co.uk/forum/forums/t/270.aspx

at the end of the post are pictures of the drain holes in the sills. The top pic shows the rear set of two holes, the second pic the front ones, they are just below the front door opening.  A small penknife blade is the best thing for clearing them out, will only take 5 mins. I would park in the middle of the road myself, you can soon move if you need to.

Yes geoff I did read it, those dents in the sill there are no holes at all.  Do you mean they are tiny slats or slits where the dent goes up?

Is that what I should poke with the knife?

Yep those are the ones. It’s nearly midnight here, but I’ll take some pics in the morning with a knife in the slot

Right think I have done it.  No water sloshing now when I brake hard.  the first little slat nearest to front wheel the knife blade came off and is now stuck fast, tried pliers etc and plus gas, oh heck, anyway the larger slat behind that the knife went straight up, little drops came out.  the back ones the same little drops, checked the drivers side all clear.    Can not hear any water at all.  I expected a bucket load to come out.

When I cleared mine a lot of water came out. Enough to get my shirt cuff wet (I did it at work!) and make me swear!!

I wouldn’t start drilling about on the sills. You might want to spray in some rust repellant stuff (waxoyl etc) into the sill via the screw holes if you remove the chrome kick plates.

If you have a fixed radio aerial that unscrews you will find it’s just right for gently clearing out the drain tubes. If you do this every couple of months or so you should have no repetion of the problem and hopefully no rust either!

Hi Tracey

If you can get to the planning meeting on Sunday at the Crown, maybe someone could have a look at your sill and suggest a way to remove the blade end!![:(]

I wish I could but I will be busy taking my daughter back home to chester.  I have sprayed some plus gas in the slat so gonna try again today!

My own fault really should not have pushed it up so high!  But I wanted to make sure it was totally clear ha ha.

You can see it sticking out look silly.  But at least no more sloshing.
