In Honor of Elvington Airfield, “Operation Yorkie” is to be the ER occupation of the surrounding area for a few days after the spring rally.
There are lots of ER troops heading up to Yorkshire, staying at several locations, most of us are making at least a long weekend of it.
We will be running a few “Sorties” in the area following the rally, but every successful tactical operation of this size needs a plan, so… where shall we go and what is there to see?
lots of nice roads, need to do some homework on those, if we plan well we can probably do most of them, (didn’t someone volunteer to look at the drives?)
York is a great city to visit, cathedral, city walls you can walk on almost all the way around the city centre, great museums, including the National Railway Museum which is very good, (and free iirc),
Whitby is nice,
Robin Hoods Bay is nice,
Scarborough, thats there as well,
etc
etc
And of course there will be the evening entertainment, which we need to choose carefully… [;)]
Talk to Mick Gauntlet about drives in the Yorkshire Dales, he reckons it’s Gods own Country, and he’s not far off [for the UK[;)]] I spent the winter of 2005 up there staying in Menston, and travelled most of the roads, they really are very good, real drivers roads and stunning scenery. Just a taster for you
As part of the Yorkshire occupying forces, some inside intelligence for you: all the places listed are very pretty, particularly Robin Hood Bay and you would do well to beat fish and chips in Whitby. Also if your going to go into the Dales stop for lunch in Pately Bridge; The Crown on the highstreet almost opposite the car park, Mrs E and I often go there for our Sunday lunch and it comes highly recommended.
What about trying all 3 of the Saturday rides the YR area has lined up for the Spring Rally, all the food groups in there for you? I’m sure there will be spare route cards will be left over from the weekend.
Re the York Railway Museum; being a national museum entry is free, a little bonus in these trying times maybe but parking can be a challenge, patricularly if you attempt a flanking maneouvre in a platoon of two seaters!
