PMs - how private are they?

Just wondering as one of my PMs is listed as having one reply but 4 views. How have 4 people viewed a PM between me and one other person with just one message each?

Luckily the PMs were used to save other people being bored by the content, but what if it were details of where I live and how much cash I keep under the mattress? Or chassis numbers. Or a joke so funny that an unprepared reader could laugh themselves to death?

Muppet.

This has been discussed before - the view count is the number of times it has been viewed, not the number of different people that have viewed it.

However, it is worth noting that the title of a PM is public

See here for what I mean - http://www.mx5oc.co.uk/forum/forums/t/3362.aspx this is my discussion with Tania regarding her account issues. Note you can see the title (and even then, the only way you could ever see that would be by entering random numbers is the address bar, and getting lucky), and the details of the last post, but none of the content, nor the sender/reciever, just the last person to post.

So, if you are genuinely concerned, be a bit selective with your title, such as “Inappropriate user”, rather than “Ban [username]”, or “Hidden Money” rather than “£500 under my mattress”.

Failing that, you could always send an email, but even then, I wouldn’t be telling my life secrets through the forum interface - establish each others addresses and then use Outlook/whatever to tell them where the money is (and encrypt that as well if you want to be extra safe).

The email system is great for when people don’t use the forum often, or for admin to communicate with users - a lot of people won’t check there inbox each time, but will check their email.
I used it last night to let a user who has had logging in issues know that there account is sorted - no way they were going to get their PM.

Cheers for that! Excellent and useful post.
