Poking fun at MX5 drivers :(

not sure if it’s significant, but, we got our mx during lockdown 1, when the hairdressers were shut!

Just enjoy it Darren. My neighbour reckons he could have more fun in a Transit van, and I worked so hard to keep a straight face. As you say, each to their own.

I am now mid-60’s and hankered for the MX5 for years, but always bought cars for my children to drive, as the insurance whilst they were young was not feasible. When the time came once Uni arrived and went for it at the first opportunity.

My wife has had new BMW’s, a 5 series and a 2 series, both of which I loved to drive, but the MX5 makes the blood flow. She now has a Seat Arona, which I drive when I want peace and quiet, but if I want a more raw piece of kit, especially if I can drop the roof, I feel like a kid again when I drive the Mazda.

I could not care less what other folk think. Just give me some tight bends…

I always thought that the 1 series BMW was for those who wanted a BMW but couldn’t afford a proper one.

(Confession - I used to own a bright yellow 316 with a totally shot big end, more rust than panelling and an almighty pair of un-named carbs with which I almost burnt my garage down after it blew back into the fuel saturated wire mesh air filter. No idea why I ever bought it but I was young and daft(er) back then.)

I remember a German friend of mine once said “in Germany BMWs are ordinary cars” he was amazed at how highly desirable they were over here.

I can remember something similar about Mercedes, being told on a visit in the 1980s “most of the Mercedes here are Taxis.”
I guess that was when they had an amazingly long Warranty; taxi drivers are canny when it comes to money.

Mercedes never needed or offered a long warranty because of their build quality.
They do now.

This below tells you everything you need to now about the average BMW driver (not all - I have sometimes seen one use its indicators and have a driver without a baseball cap on). It’s a status thing. They want to be looked at and revered by everyone else on the road. They buy inappropriate vehicles and think they are good drivers because they drive fast cars. Anyone can drive fast in a straight line in a fast car. Many don’t even realise they are rear wheel drive or 4 wheel drive. All they are bothered about is what the neighbours think.

This is a quote from the Honest John problem page…Totally wrong car for town driving but they wanted to impress and are now paying stupid money for the privilege.

I have a BMW X3 M40d purchased November 2019. It’s done around 10, 500 miles in that time mostly around town with only a few motorway trips. It’s just had its first service and I’ve been informed that it needs 4 new tyres already! The front ones are just legal and the rear ones aren’t. A new set is going to cost around £1000! Shouldn’t I be getting more miles from these tyres and what can I do to improve tyre wear, apart from not drive it?

I have a 1 series, M140, traded in my 3 series cabriolet for it. Then found I missed the open air experience and hence have had a couple of MX5s in parallel with the BM.
I have always found those on the BM forum I frequent have an admiration for MX5s. Never had any negative or judgemental comments about my Lady Car.

It’s ok to be a schizophrenic as long as you’re not paranoid about it.

I think those 2 knew you were making a valid point, and they had no valid counterpoint at their disposal.
My NC Venture Edition has only attracted positive comments, but I would happily cast aside negative ones with a heated argument should the opportunity arise.

If you have a BMW and an MX5 you must be a friendly yet rude driver…

So this thread went from “why are people making fun about my MX5” to “lets make fun about BMWs”. Ok.

Thinskinned comes to mind.

I’ll happily listen to opinions of others, but not when that includes telling me not to comment on a BMW because I have an MX5.

I responded to the comment making reference to online bullying and #bekind. He called me a “snowflake”. I blocked him after that.

I’m just keeping my head down in case this thread starts going on about Audi drivers…

Haha, I should also keep quiet - my other vehicle is a white van! (Although its not a Transit, its a Berlingo)

Mike,
I suspect you have never driven an old Petrol V4 transit unladen.
I have fond memories of driving one.
When I drove a Vitesse Mk 2 I could never keep up with the securicor transit in the twistys on the way to work.
I was once told the definition of a sports vehicle,
It was any vehicle driven in a sporting manor !!
Our modern work transit flatbed is no fun whatsoever.
I had the most fun ever driving 2cv’s the only car I have ever been happy to corner on three wheels in. ( Apart from a Berkley three wheeler that was supposed to be on three wheels )

I would love an M3 but can’t warrant the expense. Those of an age will remember the World Tour cars of the 80s when there was a proper racing pedigree. M3s vs Cossies. Fab! My bro had an original M3 left hooker. Stunning! Idiot sold it.
So i make do with my MX5 and Kit car for extra thrills.

Technically it’s reading other opinions, not listening. You don’t have to read all the Tweets.

Not really sure a reference to Mike Tyson commenting on the Royal Ballet is really what people had in mind when they came up with the term “online bullying”. To be fair, when you use that term, in the context of two pretty trivial responses to your post about a BMW, you are really debasing the term, which is more usually associated with really vicious and denigrating attacks.
