Is there a way to post a poll on this forum? It can be done on most other ‘breeds’ of forum software, but I can’t find a way to do it on this one …
Hi Garath, have you got a poll option on the first page [ie write a new post page]? I get 6 options, one of which is tabbed poll. However I can’t make it work ?—
Hi Geoff.
No, I haven’t got a Poll option. The tab options I get are Compose, Options, Video, Related and Preview.
Thats strange, I get a poll option between Video and Related. I can’t believe it’s because I have admin status, that wouldn’t make sense. I’ve also had a trawl through the forum admin pages and can find no reference to polls. See my other post, this is what the instruction says when I click the poll tab–
I can confirm that standard users do not get the option to poll, unless it is a PM (as far as I can tell)
You’re right! I’ve just checked, and although I get no poll option when posting to the open forum, I do when sending a PM. So I can put up a poll, but only one person can respond to it! That’s priceless! And they try to tell us that this forum software is good and fit-for-purpose - pull the other one! [:D]
(FWIW, I wanted to post a poll to get some idea of how many MX5OC forum members are happy with this new version of the forum, how many preferred the old one, and how many have no feelings either way - but the ability to post polls was one of many features lost in the “improvement”. You couldn’t make this stuff up!
The software does have a poll option it’s just not switched on at present. I’m sure as the other “bugs” get ironed out polls will be on the list.
“Rome wasn’t built in a day”?
Ah, so the function is there, but it’s been disabled (or, perhaps more accurately, hasn’t been enabled)? Forgive me for asking, but isn’t switching it on just a case of making a quick alteration to a setting in the ‘control centre’ of the forum?
Yes, but at the moment I don’t think it is top priority.
78 individual forums to go through and adjust the permissions, so not a quick job…
Absolutely, I agree - there are some gaping voids in the functionality which are much more important than polls! But - and I hope this doesn’t sound facetious or disrespectful because it isn’t intended to be - isn’t it something that could’ve been ‘turned on’ in less than the time it took you to post your reply?!
My offer (which I mentioned a couple of weeks ago in another thread) of getting involved with the ‘behind the scenes’ work on the forum still stands - I generally have time to pop in for a browse most evenings, either from home or while I pass the time during a show at work, and would be happy to lend a hand with the day-to-day admin of things like this, helping to ensure that the forum software is being used to its best potential.
Edit : just read Martin’s note which explains that it’s something which has to be done individually for each sub-forum. So I can understand why it’ll take some time, and I’m rapidly coming to appreciate the enormity of the task that has been placed in the path of the forum admins - but surely the fact that there’s no way to adjust something like this globally is an indication that this software isn’t what it should be?
it can be done globally, but who says we want to? As admin there are sections where I would not want people starting polls, so therefore its not just a ticking boxes exercise but a decision making one as well…
the enormity of the task is the need to serve the 1200 members we already have. Love it or hate it, we have hit the ground running with this forum in my opinion, and the fact that its gone from zero to nearly 4500 threads in 4 weeks proves it works… We have lots to do to improve it, some minor tweaks to software, some more major software stuff with respect to the club database integration, and a lot of admin type decisions to take as to which bits are working and which are not… But with so much its the decision making thats time consuming not the doing… The gaping voids in functionality are not denied and we will address them… 1200 members and 4500 threads show up so much more than anyone can tell from testing with a few people. So all things considered I reckon its going OK… 7/10,
