Proper Multicar insurance

I’m with Admiral for last 4 or 5 year, always managed to negotiate a little at renewal but can’t get near their prices anywhere else.

2016 Golf 2.0 GTI - me

2015 1.0T Fiesta - Wife and me

Mx5 2.0 Z sport - me and wife

2005 1.2 Corsa - me, wife, daughter who’s 21 and son who’s 18 - dog car, although he is not insured.

2005 1.4 Honda Jazz - Daughter, wife and me

2012 Corsa 1.4T Black Edition - Son and me

All in for year is £2000, which i think is crazy good value, costs me about a grand for and £600 for son and £400 for daughter.

Never had to claim yet, so no idea on that side.

Also worth noting car ratings often make no sense.

When son was looking for a Corsa, he started looking at 1.2 limited edition, body kit and alloys etc.

He then spotted the black edition, same body kit and alloys, but 1.4 turbo 120bhp and i got a quote, more to show him it would be to expensive and it came in cheaper than a 1.2 with 70bhp.

I assume the 1.2 limited editions keep being crashed by the youngsters as there are loads of CAT C/D etc for sale, but not many Black editions as only 500 where made.

Obviously post code, mileage etc all have a bearing but that was all the same for both cars.

Strange thing about Admiral is if you ring after normal working hours, you get a reply from (usually female) In Newfie (Newfoundfland) I find them more helpful and reasonable than normal Admiral staff. As my current insurance is now invalid, I can’t comment on current prices, but I do know that every renewal year I had to ring them and plead for a decrease , otherwise it seems the skies the limit. Same story with every insurer, they tempt you in with a lower cost, then make it up at renewal time, you either pay the piper or find some other insurer to tempt you with a lower premium, - then it starts again. The OP said “How quaint” when someone replied that ringing up was best, but on the contrary, you are a fool if you think the internet works better. Even a search engine doesn’t help, you will often find that initial quotes sound reasonable, till you start talking to them, then the price goes up anyway. Personal contact generally works better, but not always!

I did like Admiral as 1) they accept people over 72 and 2) they accept up to six modifications on your vehicle, which can cover most mods, but not all - often leaving you with the thought that if you ever need to make a claim, they will refuse cover on the grounds that your car has more than six mods from OEM, and is therefore not covered because of that. It takes careful thought.

Remember that in case of accident, they send an investigator out to examine your vehicle and any other involved. They first check damage, but then carry a check list of what is standard and what is not, end add details to their report, looking for any way out of the possible loss to them. I’ve never totally trusted any insurer for that reason. Same with any policy, they are looking for a way out. Their main job is loss limitation, not your cover.

^^^ Wise words Gerry, especially the calling them to discuss part.

I’ve found they (Admiral) very easy to talk to, get hooked on to one particular person to deal with and they’ll even call you back if it’s not convenient to go through it all there and then. I don’t get the Newfoundland bit, I’ve only ever dealt with their HQ in Wales, definately Welsh accent?

Of course they could screw me for more money at renewal, if they won’t play ball by reducing I move on to the next company. I’m running out of ones to try now, so I’ll start all over again with Direct Line or even the Co-op, more recently those two have been the most expensive.

I used to pop down to a local brokers in the early 70’s which my dad put me on to, he even rang up and said I’m on the way, do him a good deal as he had his car insured through them. You used to rely on offices like that to get your insurance, same s–t though different era, a sharp intake of breath when they told you your renewal price.
