I fitted the ‘Absolutely Shocks’ Gaz kit from Mx5Parts yesterday (this one) using the San Diego method. Straight forward and I’m glad I did it myself. I did about 100miles including some very lumpy B roads today, and nothing fell off so I think I’ve done it right
It’s currenty riding at F320mm and R325mm, is that enough rake?
The additional instructions from Mx5Parts suggest bound/rebound settings of 16 clicks on the front, and 28 on the rear where more clicks is more firmness. Now, in my playstation level of suspension tuning knowledge (ok, none), a front engined rwd car should have a softer rear. Is this radically over-simple? I know the rear springs themselves are softer (300lb instead of 375lb), is that all that matters for f/r and the bound setting is just to be modified to make the shocks do the right amount of work?
I started at 22 on the rear, (less than recommended) and found the ride at the rear to be bouncy, almost nauseatingly so, i’d rather crashy than bouncy, so I upped it to 29 and it was far better. My rationalisation is that at the low setting the shocks weren’t doing enough work, so the springs were free to control the ride. Does that make any sense?
Without buying a hefty and dry tome on suspension theory, where can I get a simple grounding in what I need to know?
I have to get a geometry setup done once it’s bedded in and i’m satisified with the ride height, I think I will try these guys as they are near me, WIM is a very long way.
Any one else using full adjustables? How did you get a setup that you are happy with?
The optimum height is 13" front 13.5" rear, 12/15 clicks front, 14/18 rear, after that your on your own since the damper settings are unique to the driver/s needs.
Obviously the chassis needs to be tuned to meet your requirements since the OEM positions are redundant, if you need help with this ring my bell.
Booked in at WIM on Saturday 10am.
I’ll aim to have your optimum dialled in for the drive up so I can say what I need.
cheers
