I like the look of the silver surrounds for the air vents in the '5, but looking at the price I thought that there may be a cheaper alternative. I pulled out the vents with a pair of long nosed pliers and then gave the surrounds a rub down with very fine wet & dry, just to form a key. I then painted them with some silver aluminium paint that I had in the workshop (working on the theory that if I made a B*lls up I would buy the chrome ones). I feel the results are well worth the effort, see the piccy below.
Did you laquer them after paint
Were your vent rings smooth plastic or textured, the ones in my 2.5 seem to have a grainy texture, so I assume more rubbing down would be needed to get right into the grain
No I didn’t laquer them afterwards because although they do come apart, I didn’t want to risk breaking them. The surrounds were smooth but with a bit of effort watching the telly you could easily rub yours smooth. The photo’s don’t really do them justice, they look really good. It’s worth a try.
