Hi Devon, is that unit running android 4.4.4 or 4.4?
It says its 4.4OS on advert.
Thank you for the info devon
Well its all in and working Ok, pic of the install done, its not the best view but gives you a pretty good idea…
It runs Andriod 4.4, had a slight problem with WiFi, sorted now, steering wheel control (might do later, not a problem now). It has all the features needed for expansion. Have already got hold of an OBD2 Diagnostic Scanner for the Mazda which interfaces to the unit by WiFi. Should be interesting.
I’ve done a virtually identical upgrade. I removed a Bose 6CD unit and I went for this Pumpkin Android Unit. The hands fee bluetooth works very well and you can match the colour of the switch’s back lights to blend with the reddy orange of the mazda’s interior lights.
I installed Sygic Sat Nav (it was on offer over Xmas) and also got an OBD2 Bluetooth Scanner and then installed Torque Pro to get lots of information about the engine. For me, PLayerPro was the best Music Player (better than the one that came with the pumpkin) but this will be a personal choice.
A cheap reversing Camera from Fleabay was also fitted and I find it very useful, it just comes on as soon as you go into reverse.
The one observation that I would make is that at night the screen is quite bright (even when turned down) and can be quite distracting (only Sygic Sat Nav has a “Night Mode”).
Well worth the effort in my opinion.
I want something very much like this. On my 2009 MX5 the BOSE unit has been replaced by the previous owner with a single DIN Pioneer DAB unit.
I have some questions about the Pumpkin unit.
-
Does the steering wheel control work with it?
-
Does it support DAB (not vital)?
-
Where do you put the GPS aerial?
-
Where do you put the USB input?
-
How do you route the camera cable?
-
Can an idiot like me manage to fit it, or should I find a fitter?
Hi zpat
- Steering control will work, but you have to find the wiring To patch into the unit.
2 Yes it supports DAB, you have to get the add on DAB module.
3 You can put the GPS aerial virtually anywhere, it’s a long one with a magnetic base, positioned mine under the dash and still get a strong GPS signal even in a closed garage.
4 The unit has two USB ports.
5 Routed through the central trunk, back to the boot and connected to the reversing light.
6 Not difficult to fit took me about 3 hours in total, and I am an old codger. The Pumkin is a tight fit so you need a bit of patience and determination, as mentioned before the wiring harness needs routing a bit.
No special tools are required, but I did find one of those headlights strapped to your head is very useful when looking into restricted spaces and it also leaves both hands free.
GO for it
I am a bit concerned about your comment re: steering wheel control. For me this is a must and also it needs to be a case of plugging in (as I am not going start splicing wires). I am not sure if an adapter will be needed for the Mazda steering control.
The steering controls are working fine with the Pioneer unit currently fitted.
so what was the total cost of doing all this? I’d be interested in doing this too, but I’m unsure of the quality of these stereos as well as the cost. I’d be more keen on going for the single din unit with the folding screen so I gain some cubby space at the same time.
When I did mine I called Car Audio Direct and ordered the Steering Wheel connectors from them, they were very helpful in making sure I had the right bits.
I agree with everything above, it mirrors my experience. Mine also came with an iPod adaptor lead (old style). I did take longer though as I test wired everything first, then when I was sure it was all OK, I redid it all with Solder, Heat Shrink and Cable Ties. A tidy loom is a happy loom!

The total cost, head unit, faceplate, iso harness = £260. I reckon that’s great value for the kit you get. The choice is yours
Update…
Now had a little time to play with the unit, its performing well. Have installed Co-Pilot (full version, on offer).
Bluetooth and WiFi Issues
The BT on the unit is only designed for BT call and music, if you want to use a keyboard use a wireless /USB one.
Some phones will not connect automatically to Bluetooth
If WiFi signal strength is not that good, then it will not automatically connect.
Good support from manufacturer on these issues, mainly OS related, now I know how to get around and resolve them.
Just as an FYI, here’s mine. I’m using PlayerPro as the music player in this screengrab.
sorry to go slightly off topic … I’m looking at installing a double din into my mk3 the only thing is i can’t seem to find this 10mm bolt … I’ve had my head under the driver side foot well and can’t see it (can only see those too larger bolts attached to a vertical metal piece) when i bought my car it came with a single din alpine aftermarket stereo so i can’t tell if the bolt just wasn’t put back in. i tried prying the head unit out after removing the two screws and it seems like its not budging. has anyone got any ideas? every set of instructions i seem to find are for left hand drive models so i can’t tell if it that thats the issue …
If the original radio has been removed the 10mm bolt will have been removed to take it out.
Even if the original radio was there it’s not uncommon for the bolt to be missing if the radio has been removed for some reason. It’s a pain to get out and more so to put back so very few ( no one ) bothers.

ps try removing the glove box and pushing from behind. the clips on the facia plate can be tight.
I’m a little unsure as to exactly what cables will i need to purchase to link up the pioneer head unit. the car is standard non bose as far as I’m aware although the previous owner of the car installed an after market single din head unit so is there any other way of finding out?
so far I’ve found that i will need the following -
PC99 - x46
PC99 - pioneer patch cable
connects2 CT24MZ08 facia
instead i have also found that rather than buying the pc99 cables all i need is -
ctsmz002.2
and the patch cable
so which one is it …
is that all i need ? and with this will my steering controls work ?
Hi Bendiazclegg
Not an expert on this, but do the steering controls work now ?
Using that logic (they do) all you would need is the facia and or iso lead for your model you intend to fit. Remember all head units are not the same configurations.
Regards the 10mm bolt, mine never existed, its a 2007 UK m3
hi, currently they do not work with the single din i have in the car now, i finally pulled out the head unit today, the screw wasn’t there it just needed a good tug to get it out.
I have been reading reviews of this pumpkin unit. A couple of issues seem to be unresolved. Any comments?

No traffic alerting feature (almost all cars have TA in their standard radio).
-
The display dims when the car’s headlights are on - so if you turn them on during the day - you can’t see the screen!
-
Radio quality (FM) is reportedly not that great.
