I’ve had mine done twice plus another in my daily driver. Faultless craftsmanship and service and although there’s people who do similar more locally, I’m happy to send my wheels to Royal every time. 
Royal did the wheel on my ND Z-Sport. Very similar to you I had the rim thickened slightly and perforated leather on the sides. They matched the cherry red stitching perfectly so it looks original (only better!).
Cannot fault Royal Steering Wheels, superb workmanship, very easy to deal with and sensible prices.
Owing to the fewer number of splines on the steering column on MX-5 compared to some makes/ models, it’s sometimes difficult to get the wheel completely straight. Mine was very slightly off-centre after it was retrimmed. I needed to get my tracking/ wheel alignment done anyway, so the garage was able to correct the issue

What’s the process like?
Really simple. Order your preferred option on their website - which has plenty of MX-5 examples, and choose the deposit option where they send you the wheel you want and you return your old wheel. The refurbished wheel you receive will be stripped of all the trim / buttons so once you receive it you need to take your old wheel off, remove the trim and buttons and transfer them to the wheel they’ve sent you. Dead easy - plenty of videos on YouTube. I managed it in about 10 mins. You then send back your old stripped wheel (using the box your refurbished wheel arrived in) and they refund you your deposit. FYI mine was listed as slightly thicker with thumb grips and perforated leather on the sides. Hope that helps.

That sounds pretty good, my only worry would be messing with the airbag, are there any precautions needed when removing and re-installing it?
The YouTube videos are very good and cover pretty much every thing you need to do step by step.
Taking off the air bag is straight forward too once you press the pins holding it in place (you will see this in the videos).
Disconnect the battery first, then leave it half an hour before taking the air bag off.
The experience steering the car while holding on to the thicker steering wheel is as fantastic as the steering wheel looks

I’ve been following your thread with interest.
Today I took the plunge and ordered one (Flat bottom one in all black) on the postal exchange system.
Slightly thickened with smooth black napa leather top and bottom and perforated leather with thumb grips.
I bought a really cheap tatty one off a breaker and Royal are happy to take that one.
I decided to keep my original one in case of selling the car or whatever.
An excellent decision- you won’t be disappointed!

I noticed the big difference going from my Volvo back to the MX-5, which prompted me into spending some of my wife’s pension. 
Very similar design to the Volvo.
Keeping with the black theme.
Arrived and fitted today.
