I posted on another thread re knocking that came when I reversed and turned full lock in the cold. Just two or three knocks could be heard as I slowly came out of the turn. In the last few days (absolutely freezing here) it has begun to develop into a judder through the steering wheel as I turn. I am in a blind panic as I don’t even know if I should be driving the car.
Robbie if you read this, it is coming down to you next Monday for a service so I’m hoping you won’t tell me it is something hideously major and that you’ll be able to fix it
Thank you in advance for any advice you can all give.
(on the last thread the very helpful answer was that it may the bushes worn through -would this cause the steering to now judder?)
whilst getting it serviced get them to have a look at the wheel bearings on the front. A knocking at slow speeds when turning can be a sign that a wheel bearing has gone, this could also affect the balance of the front wheels and give you a judder in the steering as you speed up.
I am reading this… So I’ll have at least one interesting job to do on Monday then!
slackthedalek may not be too far off the mark with his suggestion of the tight lock causing the noise. As the road is slippier this time of the year, the wheels will jump more than on a dry grippy road making the noise sound worse.
Ask for me to come out and drive the car with you to listen when you drop it off to make I am listening to the same noise you are hearing.
Will do although over then past few days the noise has gone and it is now just a jolting when on full lock. I know that the tracking is off as the tyres are showing uneven wear so maybe that might contributing?
Be interested to here if you find anything. At the moment I get a clunk when I first pull away and turn the steering, either going forward or in reverse but it is fine when driving along. I have jacked it up and wiggled everything but cant find any play in anything.
I’m relieved there is nothing major going wrong with her but still perplexed. It seems it is only playing up when it is really cold. As you are only a few hundred metres down the road from me, next time it is freezing I’ll get you to come and see what a pain she can be lmao.
Anyway I am much relieved and happy to have my car back, even one day driving something else was too much of a trauma.
Thanks again
Becs
PS PHil is yours ok when the weather is fine or does it ‘knock’ all the time?
Oh dear the noise is back with a vengance :-(. Trouble is by the time I can get it down to the garage it will have warmed up and the noise will be non existant. It only happens when I first drive off in the morning or after standing in the damp for a long time. I should have jumped out after the meet last Tuesday as it happened as I pulled away but I was hoping it would disappear again lol. What do you suggest Robbie, shall I book it in for you to have a look at anyway?
I responded in an earlier post with a similar problem. Well at last I have found it. I jacjed the front up and gave everything a good shake and lever and could feel a small amount of play that felt as though it was in the steering rack. however on further investigation I found that it was the bottom swivel taper was not tight in the stub axle.
I removed the split pin from the castleated nut with the intention of tightening it but could not get the taper to grip even with a small bottle jack pushing. This was because the castleated nut was seized on the thread. I had to resort to heating the nut up to remove it, then cleaned/lubricated both threads and refitted it. This time the swivel teped gripped in the stub axle and the play and clunking noise have gone. I can only assume that the swivel taper was not fully tightened when the shock absorber was changed by the previous owner (according to service records) which has resulted in this free play occuring. Anyway all ok now and perhaps it will help you.
