I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: Brake discs and pads.
Good morning everyone.
I have an appointment tomorrow for changing the rear tyres in my MX-5. I was considering to have the rear discs and pads changed too since they are up for it and I wanted some recomendations if possible. It is the first time I want to do this with this car. In previous cars I didn’t really mind what they mounted, but in this car is a different experience.
Given the fact that I use the car for regular use, but I do use it as well for leisure driving on the weekends, what brake discs and pads would you recommend?
And how this exactly works in the workshop? Should I go with a specific model or should just tell them what I am telling to you? How much do you think I should pay for these components installed? It is a regular workshop, not a MX-5 specialized one since there are not any of them in my area.
Thank you very much for your help in advance. It is the first time I take my car out of Mazda and I can use some advice.
I use EBC Redstuff pads on the rear, which work really well for me and less pad dust too. EBC disks have worked well too.
Don’t overthink it, just let them fit whatever they get in.
A bit of “leisure driving” isn’t going to hurt and performance pads, if you go too far, will either squeal and/or not bite when cold. And “Cold” is going to be 99% of your use case.
Besides, given it’s going in tomorrow, you’ll be at the mercy of whatever brand is available from the local motor factors…. thats if the garage even have time in their schedule to “just” add in a set of discs & pads
Mazda OEM.
Brembo “Prime Line” are excellent items.
Certainly for a road car and won’t break the bank either.
Is there something wrong with OEM? I very rarely recommend changing brake pads simply because most people do not do enough aggressive braking to need anything different…its hard to out-engineer an OEM when it comes to testing hours for brake pad composition…or anything else. There are times when its justified(IE: a race car, or a car with an engine swap that has had its weight distribution changed significantly or a car that lives 90% of its time in the mountains driving down steep grades) but those cars are the exception to the rule.
Usually price. People often don’t want to pay.
I’ve done the internet hero alternative brakes stuff in the past on other cars- in every case they weren’t as good as the OEM original ones on there. And I’ve even went out and got the OEM proper ones soon after and, surprise surprise, all was back to good again.
Nothing at all wrong with OEM discs/pads.
Generally down to brake dust perhaps as some worse than others.
Some now come with coatings to please the eye as time goes by.
But mostly down to price I suspect.
I can state that the OEM Volvo stuff is very expensive and non treated coating wise and no better than say a Brembo set, (in my opinion).
Brembo discs use “High Carbon” (as others) which is obviously better than standard cast discs.
(I won’t bore you why).
I actually still have the original OEM front discs on my MX-5 and they do wear very well, 2013 34k.
Like everything in life you get what you pay for.
I found the Brembos pretty good, I changed the NC I owned to those. Now got Brembos pads all round on my ND, don’t know what the discs are, I didn’t fit them, they look in good shape but they have been changed from the OEM that were on.
Thank you very much for the answers everyone. The brembos seems to be a good option and I may go for them. I found them at “https://www.autodoc.co.uk/”. Is it a good site?
And another question. Apart from the two disks and the two pads, I think I may need a fitting kit too? I see that in the pad description it says that it doesn’t include accesories. Not exactly sure what that means ![]()
I’m thinking on:

Thanks in advance!
I have used them before for Gates auxiliary belt/tensioner kit and good service.
I do use this company now for the vast majority of my stuff for our cars, daughters etc.
They list the vast majority of names so the world is your oyster.
(Just done a Focus ST all round with good price for the Brembo kit).
They also have an eBay shop too which very often gives extra discount.
Prompt delivery and great customer service too.
