They are a more substantial foam than the grommet seals.

My car started to steam up heavily and at first I couldn’t trace the source. All usual culprits had been dealt with long ago. A damp newspaper in the boot gave it away. Under the boot carpet was a puddle.
New seals from mx5parts cured the problem completely. Despite using a hairdryer to remove the water droplets from the inside of the light unit it took several weeks of driving with the lights on to remove the last vestiges of condensation in them.
