Rear suspension metallic clonk

  1. My model of MX-5 is 2013 Venture Edition 1.8 20k from new: __
  2. I’m based near: West Sussex __
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: We have ever increasing 3rd world road surfaces and the past couple of years I have an increasing metallic clonk from the rear suspension both sides over slight potholes/speed humps /drain covers. The past 2 MOTs I have asked to investigate but nothing found, it sounds like a ball joint or anti roll bar any suggestions?? __

Same query been asked very recently, have a look under the thread…

“NC rear suspension banging - what to check next”

Hi buddy, I own a mk2.5 Euphonic, I had the same issue. I’m in the enviable position to own my own engineering company that specialises in break down repairs, I have a great mechanic who informed me that the problem was the camber adjustment bolt on the rear bottom suspension arm. He tightened up the bolt and, believe it or not, the problem was solved. You need to put a spanner on the adjuster side( towards the back of the car) and asocket on the front to stop the adjuster marker moving. I’m not saying this is your problem, but it does sound very close. Let me know what happens.i was convicted at one point, that my exhaust was banging when I went over a bump was the issue.

My car had recently started to have a clanking sound coming from the rear…significantly on the passenger side. This ‘rattle’ was noticeable more on corrugated surfaces or rumble strips, smooth roads not a problem. I was beginning to think it was worn bushes or the like tho’ I have recently fitted new suspension and everything was checked during that job. Turned out it was the brake pads rattling in the callipers and a simple removal, clean and re-grease with copaslip has cured the noise.

I had this on my NC. Turned out it was the plastic dust cap from bottom of the shock (under the rubber dust boot) that had slipped down. Every time I hit a large bump (especially speed bumps), the loose dust cap would jump up up and down, creating a strange clonking noise!

A bit of electrical tape is holding it in place, and has been for ~2yrs now.
