rear window

hi does anybody have any ideas for repairing the plastic rear window!! mine has torn in the frosty weather…many thanks

Sorry - no ideas for repairing the plastic screen other than perhaps a new window panel - if you can identify the mak.
Other than that a temp bodge until you can get a new roof.

Ah, bad luck. I don’t think there’s a successful way to repair a split plastic window, you just need to replace it. Thankfully, if the rest of the roof is in good nick you can just replace the rear zip-out section. I believe I’ve also heard of people stitching in a new window to the rear panel - don’t know who does this work, though. I replaced my rear section with a glass window. That had the advantage of being clearer and having a demister, though the downside is that it was much heavier, so needed a particular two-handed technique to zip it into place, and it hung lower so I lost some visibility (so I didn’t see the blue lightbar on the roof of a Range Rover who was tailgating me - oops). I patched mine with gaffa tape (duct tape) until I arranged a replacement. I found that it won’t stick at first - the tape just fell off. Cleaned that bit of the window with white spirit, and the tape gripped like it was never coming off (which indeed it never did). Safe at any speed. Don’t get any white spirit near your paintwork, obviously.

Martin where did you get the glass window from? I have a similar problem with my plastic window.

yes thanks for that manage to find a place in milton keynes that can just replace the clear plastic and renew it for £125 rather then the whole zip up section which Mazda told me would be £250 then £250 labour costs!!!

Hi. First time on the new forum. Taking a bit of getting used to!

I’ve just broken the zip on my MKI’s rear window. Currently taped up with Duck Tape. I agree it works a treat as a tide over but make sure you use PLENTY as it burst open when I dropped the window whilst on the M25 and sent in an icy breeze! I suspect it’s not worth replacing alone as the roof is appx 5 years old and just starting to split over the bars (albeit only a little and not leaking yet), so might aswell replace the lot.

Any suggestions for a cheap / good outfit not a million miles from Chelmsford, Essex? Want another tan hood, this time probably with glass not plastic. Was almost tempted by mohair or are they a little pricey / tarty…?! Still like the idea though. Hmmm. See how much…

Last one cost me c.£250 and was fitted in someone’s garden in Romford I think. Can’t remember where though

All suggestions gratefully received.

Cheers, Tom

I got mine from Autohoods, although it was some years ago, and I understand the design has changed since.
The version I had used what looked like (and I’m told actually was) a Citroen 2CV back window.
