Refurbing an old rocker cover

Hi all,

I have recently acquired an spare rocker cover which I intend to clean and paint to my satisfaction. I am wondering if anyone has done this yet and if there are any particular paints / products that I should use to create the desired effect?!?! any methods of cleaning I should employ etc?

Thank you for reading this post and have a great day.

Do a search on this forum, there are lots of info on polishing and or painting them.

 Pollyanna,

I am aware of your thread (http://www.mx5oc.co.uk/forum/forums/p/801/2394.aspx#2394) which is maybe what your referring to by “do a search” I am still at a loss as to the treatment of the rocker cover… for example I see yours is Chrome, what methods did you employ to get it to a base finish to allow the chrome process to begin? I am thinking hammerite which a gent mentioned in a previous thread, I just want to make sure that the process is “do-able” for a man with limited experience.

Kind Regards

It isn’t Chrome, it has just been smoothed down and then polished with buffing wheels and compounds.

Hi Steve here i have only just joined the club and purchased a eunos mk1 a friend of mine at my local paint suppliers has just introduced me to a chrome paint in an aerosol can manufactured by mipa it is a high temperature paint and he tells me needs no undercoat temp range is 600 degrees centigrade i have yet to try it but have bought 2 cans to try on the cam cover as a temporary fix untill i take her off the road in a few years for a full respray and restoration wherein i will polish the cover and look for a high temp laquer my personal opinion if you want a permanent result would be to polish i have had good results using wet and dry starting off with the coarse grades and going to finer ending up at 1500 grit then using a metal polish use parafine with the wet and dry as it acts as a lubricant it is very slow and labourios process but i have used it on motorcycle engine cases or you could invest in some of the polishing atachments and pastes on sale hope this helps

I looked at loads of options a few years ago, from polishing to chrome plating, I ended up with powdercoat. The least hastle in terms of getting the job done, and not that expensive.

Here’s a pic, the crossover pipe was done by a different coater, in a different country, so a slightly different colour

wow all great info and advice chaps, Pollyanna really impressive work! truly amazed. i shall get out my wet and dry now and use my remaining holidays to polish to a high shine!

Thank you for your posts and comments, the images also are food for thought.

Are there any differences between a 1.6 and a 1.8 cam cover (assume I’m talking about a Mk1). I wasn’t sure if they were interchangable/identical or not.

Thanks!

The 1.6 cam cover has the lettering recessed into the cam cover. I am not absolutely sure but the 1.8 may have raised lettering. Some one will be along soon to confirm this or not.

That sounds interesting - thanks!

Hopefully someone will know whether you can fit a 1.6 cover to a 1.8 engine (or vice versa).

Polly is correct, the 1.8 has raised lettering. The cam cover will not fit a 1.6 however, it is slightly longer

Thanks Geoff. I’ll stick with looking for 1.8 covers for my 1.8 in that case!
