Noticed a few minor surface scratches on my bonnet where the previous owner wasn’t liberal enough with water while washing.
I’ve got some T-Cut for metallic paint in the garage so thought I’d go over the complete bonnet then repolish it with Mer which I also have sat on a shelf. Is this the best way of dealing with the scratches or am I better off using something like Turtle Wax Platinum Extra which did really well in an Autoexpress polish comparison?
Meguires Scratch X is perfectfor these “swirls” in the paint/laquer. Take your time, I prefer to do it by hand as the paint on the early Mk1 Raodsters is not the thickest!
Followed by a decent polish and job done!
Been looking on the net and MX5 forums and didn’t realise that cleaning/polishing the car is a black art that requires at least 10 buckets, 20 mitts and 40 different cleaners/polishes/waxes and a large lump of clay plus at least two days off work to do the job!!
There must be some middle ground here.
I wonder if Meguires Scratch X is very different to T-Cut Metallic Colour Restorer. I’m not even sure if my paint Sunlight Silver is classed as metallic??
I’d have thought a silver paint has a laquer finish.
Possibly Scratch X is less aggressive that T-Cut, don’t think you need a colour restorer - just something for the swirls???
- I just 1 bucket wash mine, and leather off… [:$]
I bought this stuff Quixx scratch remover from Ebay - it was a bit of a wild punt as it was only £7 and I had a few scratches in my Mk1 driving me mad! It worked sooo well that I have bought more. I am not a big cleaning fan, so I wanted something that would work in one go and wouldn’t need any other treatments other the the usual soapy wash and occasional wax. It also worked brilliantly on some tiny key-marks on the Mk3’s door handle when I got it. Probably the best £7 I spent on the car.
Pretty sure any silver will be a metallic. And MER is more of a polish than a wax, as far as I remember its a mild cutting compound at heart. A wax has no abrasive properties.
