Replacement EGR Valve Issues

  1. My model of MX-5 is: 2011 2.0 PRHT Kendo 5 speed
  2. I’m based near: Milton Keynes
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: Issues after replacement ERG Valve

I’ve just had the joy of replacing the EGR valve to remove an Engine Warning Light. The car was running fine but the diagnostics came up with a failed EGR valve. EGR valve duly replaced BUT the fuel consumption along my regular route seems to have dropped from low to mid thirties down to low twenties……..

Measurement of consumption is full tank to full tank and the new consumption calculation is over 150 miles since valve replaced and tank filled. Neither the route or my driving style have changed

Does anyone have any suggestions as to why this might have happened, or any suggestions as to a remedy?

Appreciate any assistance offered

I too had the engine fault light show a few days after unSORNING my 5. It came on when going to the garage for its MOT. I told the tester about this and asked the workshop to check it over. They told me it was the EGR but had I been driving it much over winter. I said not all it’s been SORNED the reply was give it a decent drive. So stuck in super fuel and given it a couple of runs and no orange light. Ok so I’m not usually an Ostrich when it comes to car maintenance but on this occasion I feel like I’ll dive it and see. Replacing the valve or even just valve motor is a pig of a job I’m told and so with my bad back it’ll be done by a garage.

Thanks to everybody for their input. I’ve been thinking through the timeline of this issue and my problems seem to have started after I filled an almost empty fuel tank and the next day(after a 60 mile round trip) the EGR issue appeared on the dash. I disconnected the battery overnight but the engine warning came up again within a few miles. The scanner identified the EGR issue and I got the local garage to confirm.

I then decided to replace the EGR and having taken the area under the windsceen apart and had a look at the work involved I decided to let the garage do the work. After the job was completed the engine warning went away.

I then saw that my tank was down past half way so filled it up did 100 odd miles and then topped the tank up again. At this point I discovered my fuel consumption was down to 22 mpg.

I think I’ve decided my issues, both EGR and consumption are probably related to a “bad” tank of fuel.

So I’m going to run out this tank and refill and see what happens.

Latest update. I’ve emptied the tank and refilled with fresh fuel. Have now done 150 miles and the economy is back at 35 mpg.

Feels like my problem was probably caused by bad fuel. Dinkt suppose I will ever know for sure
