- My model of MX-5 is: __2006
- I’m based near: _nottingham_
- I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: __radio replacement
I want to replace the existing one with one that incorporate satnav: are these generic or specific because I don’t want it to look wrong
I have double din the alpine unit going spare. It’s from my 2015 sport tech nav ( non Bose, so a simple swap). If that’s the sort of thing you want pm me & we can haggle
Depends what features you want.
I have a chinese head unit in mine - satnav is via WAZE using Android Auto.
For me it looks far better than the stock system.
Er sorry but I don’t understand double din or alpine. I just want to know if I can get a modern one with satnav which will fit.
Does all of that fit in the original hole? It does look nice.
Double din I can include the original fascia & loom as well.
Unless you are on a really tight budget or wish to keep the original theme of the car, for not much more you can get a more modern android unit, like the one Deano has.
No - wont fit without a replacement facia panel.
However - one you have the new head unit fastened in to the replacement facia panel - it fits exactly as the stock unit used to.
Please explain what 'double din ’ means
DIN refers to the size of the hole the radio fits in. The more modern upgrade from the traditional “car radio” is basically a small computer screen as in Deano’s pic which runs similar software to your smartphone and has many of the same capabilities including navigation and streaming radio. It may also have standard radio (DAB, FM, AM) reception and allow connection to a dashcam and reversing camera etc. These are nearly always double DIN.
Alpine is a manufacturer of these.
It’s all explained here : Double Din vs Single Din Stereo: Key Differences & Best Options – Car Audio Centre
DIN is short for “Deutsches Institut für Normung.”
It is a standard for the size of hole an aftermarket head unit fits into.
Single DIN is the narrow head units like this
Double DIN are the larger units looking like this
