I’ve got a MK1, and the rear window has managed to get quite a bad crack in it just about smack in the middle. I have fixed it for now with some PVC plastic glue. However, it looks horrible and so i want to replace it. I went to good old mx5parts.co.uk and there was the replacement PVC window. I went for the Genuine Mazda part instead of the aftermarket made one as i read that the Mazda one was easier to fit.
The replacement doesnt have any instructions and there is nothing in my workshop manual on replacing the rear window. It looks as though i have to sew the new part in place? or am i being ridiculous? I was wondering if anyone had replaced the rear window and could give me any tips or a link to a site with fitting instructions before i go tearing my car apart. It looks harder at the moment than im sure it is.
Any help will be greatly appreciated. [:D]
Hi,
I too have just experienced the horrible sound of my rear window splitting from one side to the other. I looked at just purchasing the replacment screen but it looked like a bit of an effort and i hate putting in more work than i need to. I just located a guy from ebay who has several complete rear replacements that will just zip in…he even has a couple of glass ones and very rasonably priced.
What did you pay for the screen?
Hi Guys
Did anyone get a reply to this, as I have the same problem and surprisingly there appears to be a lack of information anywhere as to what to do, considering that it must be one fo the most common problems.
So please help anyone
Thanks Den
I tried to do a home fix on the window. Cut out all the old window and purchased a strong but flexible clear vinyl and water resistent adhesive. Cut to shape and bending over backwards glued it in place from the inside of the hood. I then waterproofed from the outside with silicone to make a nice clean finish. Cost=£20
Within a month the dream was over, I don’t think there is anything on the planet that could hold it in place long term with all the battering from the wind, rain and upping and owning of the hood.
I have eventually gone down the road of a new hood (£100 - second hand but never fitted) and just finding the time to fit it. The full rear replacements were fetching this and more on their own which is very odd.
I would say the cheap skate way is a very temporary one…the only sensible route is a new hood or rear replacment.
I can’t check right now, but www.miata.net had instructions in the garage section for fitting a new factory window section into the roof. Only works if you have a factory roof though, as aftermarket roofs are a bit different; different zips for a start (genuine hoods have “MX-5” on the zip (UK and import spec)).
