Restoring a 1996 Mk1

Hello,

I’m a new member about to restore a 1996 Mk1 MX-5. I’ll post pictures during the job, here’s the first one, as I first saw the car when buying it…

Mazda MX-5

I’ve moved this topic to the Readers Rides forum and shall be watching it with interest. What’s the cars spec?

Thanks Robbie.
It’s a 1.8, 1996/P reg, manual, 77,549 miles is all I know so far. The car arrives tomorrow with the V5 so I’ll know more then. It’s a bit of a risk buy as I’ve not restored one before but I’m already rather excited about the project…

How did it come to be in the condition that it’s in now?

As the story goes, it was a barn find bought by a 14 year old boy to make into a stock car. He’s realised he doesn’t know what he’s doing so I bought it today for restoration. My business restores as many old cars as possible, I can’t wait until this is finished, I’m trying to decide whether to put a tan coloured hood on it, I think that colour combination looks great…?

Is that an early Owners Club sticker above the rear view mirror? The hood could be sick green colour for what it matters, no one will see it because it’ll be folded most of the time

Wow that is some project have fun and welcome Cool

Thanks Mal, it’s a bit daunting but restorations usually are at this stage, I always wish I could fast forward and see the finished car…

Work has started…

Does anyone know where to get the rear wheel arches (and bit of sill) from for a good price?

Depends what you call a good price. MX5parts do rear wings for a bit over £100. That’s what I got for my RS Limited.

I would say £100 the pair is a good price for me, restoration costs can spiral out of control so I’m always looking for a good deal…
