Retro and budget home hi fi

Just for info, I was unhappy that all the effort that everyone has put into making this thread what it is, was going unrecognised after the new site went live. Anyway, the slider bar on the right of the screen has it all in hand (sort of) press and slide back to post #1 and every contributor is there along with other info. :+1: I’m happier now! :+1:

If you’re someone who hasn’t followed this thread the info at the beginning says that it will take you 207 minutes to read it through from start to finish. What a lovely way to spend a cold, wet winter’s evening!

That may be the case but it doesn’t tell the whole story. Doesn’t say whether contributors are praising you or calling you nutty as a fruitcake.

Ah well, matters not Paul, I often wear both caps and they fit quite well!,

Right, got back home from dog walking and dropping Mrs B at work. Set to unwrapping the mystery parcel  Here it is in all its glory.

Perfect condition and packaged so well it took 20 minutes of careful cutting to remove everything. Will get it upstairs and paired with the cassette. Will post up some pics when done!
Barrie

Heres a pic of the bubble wrap alone, all the cardboard and heavy shrink wrap already in the bin!

Barrie

Well, didnt take long to get it paired up with the AIWA AD-6600 cassette deck👍both the same age so are contemporary with each other! Only room in this stand for one more piece plus the turntable, I guess a separate tuner and amp would have been a better option visually, although would have been significantly more expensive? £260 bought these two beauties, delivered to my house. Really happy with that.

There is facility on the tuner amp for a second cassette deck ( controls/inputs etc, so that might be the way to fill this AIWA rack :+1::+1:

Style-wise a perfect match! Looking really good! Excellent purchases, well done Barrie! :+1:

Moving on swiftly, I’ve brought the LEAK 600’s out for the banana socket conversion. Simplicity itself to do. The LEAK screw/2din type connections just disconnect with spade fixings inside for the wiring and 4 screws to remove the cup itself. Slightly enlarge the openings to receive the banana sockets, reconnect the spade terminals on the sockets to the original wiring and screw the cup back in. One down, one to go!

Hmm, those are the same colour for signal and ground. Possible out of phase mistake without testing each time.

For many years I’ve been using something a bit like these which are both a banana plug socket and also a binding post, and coloured Red and Black.

Coloured metal outer sleeve types exist, but they also offer more chances of shorts.

Hi Richard, it’s the camera angle? They are red and black, and binding posts as well as banana sockets!
Barrie

Heres the other pair not fitted.

Excellent! So long as you can see them they’ll look a lot smarter.

While I have the LEAK 600’S downstairs, I’ve vinyl wrapped them to match the new tannoy ones I bought.

No harm was done to the original cabinets during this process!

Couple of images of the original connections on the speakers.

Soon sorted, then wrap that one too.

Here they are, in place in the lounge, before Mrs B sees them!:woozy_face:

Love the vinyl wrap on the speakers. Nice way of tying everything in together. Wood finish can look nice but when you have components, racks and speakers in everything from light oak, through teak to walnut it can look very incohesive.

I see the OCD has kicked in for the receiver pics. Bass, treble and balance at 0. Volume at 5/10. Just missing a clock on the wall at ten to two. Nice work.

Barrie, have you tried standing the 600’s on isolation feet? They may improve the sound. Just a thought as most modern floor-standing speakers have them.

OCD, yes, I did it but not to take the pics, it sort of just happened :woozy_face:

Hi Roger, funnily enough, yes I was thinking of something along those lines? Maybe some short stands with spikes might work, I think they do need a bit of height.
