Retro and budget home hi fi

Our Nissan Juke has digit temperature display on the heater in half degree steps. I can never have it on anything with a .5 on it. If it’s on 20.5 it has to go up or down half a degree. I just can’t relax otherwise. So good to know I have a circle of friends on here where I’m considered normal… sort of. My wife doesn’t understand me.

Spikes Barrie! I think that they would penetrate the carpet AND the floor. I was thinking of something a little less destructive to the surroundings shaped something more akin to the cups that go under casters/feet on armchairs/beds just to get a little air under the speakers. My large column speakers have feet which sit on half enclosed ball-bearings about 2cm diameter and makes them quite easy to move.

PS: I had overlooked the fact that you can get pads/base items that the “pointy” part of the spike sits in!

Speaker spikes.

Hmm. I always chose to avoid them, ban them from anywhere we lived.

I don’t know what the original reasoning for them was, but at work we came up with a few.

  1. Marketing speak; if anything new is baffling enough, the early adopter will buy it.
  2. To stop lightweight louder-loud speakers from moving around, this after we played with some that were potentially loud enough but not hifi enough. (Made by Bose as PA in the very early 1970s)
  3. To annoy the neighbours downstairs; the spikes couple the bass to the floorboards beautifully.
  4. To boost sales of replacement floor coverings.
  5. Cheaper to make than a proper stand, but can sell for more.
  6. Don’t get moved by the vacuum cleaner, or the dog, or the cat. Alas, nothing can stop the kids from moving them.

The list was quite long and mostly imaginatively scurrilous, and I forget most of it, it was a long time ago and thinking up new ones enlightened a few tea breaks.

However in my first flat in 1969 we did come up a simple solution to prevent the neighbours downstairs from being quite so annoyed (by a pair of 100W Marshall 18" bass cabs); the cabs eventually each sat on a bit of plywood on their own half of an old scrap Dunlopillo Tropical foam rubber mattress. We also asked the neighbours what their tastes in music were, between us we three hairy lads in the flat had a big collection of LPs…

Your new Aiwa units look lovely Barrie.

Do you have many cassettes to play on it ?

Hi Chris, yes I have a good selection of 80’s/90’s albums and around 40 blank, sealed ones to get the party rolling! I can play Spotify through a bluetooth receiver gadget do can make some great compilation tapes of possibly obscure stuff too :+1:

Hi Barrie,
Back in the day, when I had a cassette player in my car, I made up perhaps hundreds of mix-tapes to play on journeys. The car’s glove box was always crammed with them.
As I am not good at clearing out stuff, I still have most of them. A common malady I guess !

Got a big storage box full of cassettes in the garage. Prerecorded and home taped. Why not post up a list of ‘I wish I’d got’ and if anything strikes a chord I’ll let you know.

Been wanting an AIWA AP-2200 DIRECT DRIVE Turntable ever since I sold the other one :worried::worried: I know, should never have let it go in the first place! Anyway, another immaculate one popped up at the same price I sold the last one for :+1: only issue, collect collect only from Totnes, only 11 hours round trip! Contacted seller and after much conversation, he agreed to post out to me. We discussed the best way to pack and wrap to ensure it gets to me in one piece etc. Really nice chap :+1: so, that will take pride of place on top of the AIWA full size components I recently purchased! Must stop now! Must stop now!:pleading_face::pleading_face:

Have to say, my other one was lovely, this one appears even better!

Barrie, I do believe that you’re an addict! Go “cold turkey” for a while, but watch out for withdrawal symptoms!!!

Well done with the purchase though! :+1:

I wonder what you could do to control this addiction. Maybe if you had somewhere that you could set aside for relaxing and listening to some soothing music that might help.

Then you could compare the same piece of soothing music through each of the different systems. Actually no, that might not help……………

Thanks for the offer, Roadie.
I’ve nothing to play them on at present, although I am looking out for a 1970s Sony cassette deck to match my various retro systems from that manufacturer from the era.

Been a bit quiet of late (or so it feels to me?).
I’ve been busy today though moving ‘stuff’ around

I posted previously, post #716, a pic of theTannoys/LEAK/Mourdant Short speakers, all placed in front of the TV wall. Not the best place if you want to keep your life partner happy! Been waiting for youngest to fully move into his new flat and clear out his bedroom, sorry, I meant my new HIFI room! :sunglasses:
Anyway, not fully happened yet. He’s moved out but left a lot of things behind. He assures me that this is purely a logistical matter and will be resolved shortly.
As an interim measure, I’ve removed the Tannoys and put them in the other top floor bedroom. The little Mourdant Shorts are back on the TV wall, either side of the TV itself. They are a bit near the TV as I bought a slightly larger TV than previously installed. They actually sound quite good where they are positioned, connected to the SONY tuner/amp.

To compensate for the extra space created by moving the speakers out of the lounge (I also moved the LEAK 600’s to either end of the corner suite) I brought the Soundstyle rack downstairs complete with amp/tuner/cassette deck and LEAK turntable.

I mentioned before that I’d had a nice piece of 8mm toughened glass made to size for this rack. I’ve mounted small conical spikes and cups to the stand/glass which helps locate the shelf and (I’d like to think) offers a bit of ‘isolation’ for the turntable.

The caps on top of the legs are nothing to do with the stand, originally they were part of my failed AIWA mini system giant stack project if anyone can remember that bit? They need a bit of levelling as they look slightly skewed on the pics. They help finish the legs though. Might be able to cut a notch in the caps where they meet the cross rail of the stand perhaps?
Not to be outdone by the small spikes and cups at the top, I’ve also installed a much larger set on the bottom of the legs

My camera phone is all revealing too! Can barely make out those scratches on the stand but the pic really shows them up
My LEAK HIFI benefactor on here, provided 2 sets of 5 pin DIN to female RCA’s so used one set for the AIWA CASSETTE deck input to the amplifier and the other set to connect the Bluetooth receiver to the second tape/AUX input on the amp. So have Tuner, phono, Spotify and cassette selection :+1: :+1:

There, I feel better now! I’ll survive at least until tomorrow night as Mrs B is attending some event or other in Sheffield tonight so won’t be home until around midnight and she won’t go in the lounge now until probably Friday evening. I’ll report back on my findings

Judging by the sticky marks on the TV screen somebody hasn’t been following the Coronavirus hand washing advice. On top of that who knows what infections your better half might bring back from the Peoples Republic of South Yorkshire. There be dragons there.

Hmmmm  you’re right Paul, the TV is mounted on a multi angle/tilt/swivel arrangement and I pulled it all out to gain access for the speaker install and wiring. The TV can stand about 14” away from the wall and angled to suit viewing position. In reality it just stays where it is

Interestingly, she’s in charge of managing the corona virus at her college and is currently chairing meetings with her cross college team to deal with anything that occurs. Two staff already been tested but negative results fortunately.

Note to self, Must clean up before uploading pics and also before MrsB sees those fingerprints!

Yes. Not only has Barrie got to break the news to his long-suffering lady wife that he has been buying yet more vintage stereos, but that he’s been putting holes in the carpet too ! I wouldn’t want to be in his shoes when she gets home !
