Rocketeer Build

I guess the Rocketeer is the one to go for if you think you’re going to keep it for 10-20 years or more. It will be ‘your car’, and resale is much less of an issue. If you think you’re likely to get bored or need to free up the capital, it’s probably less wise.

This.

It will come down to how much you want it.

You’ve summed up your dilemma right there.

I adore my MX-5 but there’s no way I’d spend anywhere near what you’re looking at for one even if I had that kind of money.

Have you seen any Rocketeers sell? What did they go for? Have Rocketeer actually ever sold any turn key cars at £80K?

I get your point about “restomod” but an NA MX-5 is a far cry from an old 911. If it were me I’d probably keep the 4-cylinder, do some engine plus exhaust work and add ITBs. Not cheap but more cost effective and possibly not much less fun?

I’m interested to hear what you choose to do.

If you do go the Rocketeer route please consider doing a project thead here. It will make fascinating reading.

Cheers,

Guy

Agreed, but when we are talking about 90k for an NA then it brings two cars together that you normally wouldn’t even think about comparing to one another.

Hell, for 90k you can buy a 718 Spyder AND a decent NA.

I suspect that the market for second hand Rocketeers is almost non-existent (for anything near their asking price anyway), a huge part of the appeal is building you own, one off car from scratch.

If you are going to keep it forever then go for it.

Me? I’d buy the best NA I can find, put a turbo in it and call it a day for less than 20k.
