Hi all,
I am in the process of turning my standard 1990 eunos 1.6 NA unto a lil track beast. I am after a rollcage which looks good, is safe for the track (in case of rolley polley) and is conpatible with a soft top- so I can drive the car to meets etc?
Anybody know where I can get one from??
Cheers
Alex
Try: www.mx5mad.com
Hi Alex,
Yup MX5MAD may be the way ahead, Performance 5 do Hard Dogs too. But beware, all Hard Dogs are from the US and the £ is currently pretty weak against the $ so expect to spend even more as the import costs will be passed onto the buyer no doubt. Pure economics I’m afraid, my advice; wait if you can.
Good luck.

Ok - Thanks for the advice which is the better bar to go for? or is it a much of a muchness?
If your going to go for a hard-dog then any of their range offer roll-over protection. That said I’m not sure if there are particular rules pertaining to track requirements for the type of bar, whilst the deuce looks ‘retro’ you might want to go for something like the M1 Sport. If it’s purely for track use this will offer better protection (by virtue of it being a beefier set-up) and looks be a smuch of a concern…that said it’s still an attractive addition to your 5.
Hope this helps…

Check ypur insurance too. many companies will not insure the 5 with a roll cage fitted. When I insured mine I could only get 5 companies to quote me once I added the cage on.
Yeah true I will have to check with the insurance first, as I dont want to be taking it on and off all the time.
Are the insurance companies as bad with roll bars or is it just the full cages?
I’m really keen on a hard dog roll bar (protection not style) but could live without if it is going to cause a lot of problems (had trouble getting a decent quote last year).
I had a full cage fitted on my mark 1 which i had a couple of years ago. I kept getting hurt when getting into the car as the side members were slightly higher than the rear of the seat. Also i could not place the seat fully back as the roll cage was in the way. Not much use if you were a tall driver. You also cannot lower the rear screen by itself as it sticks on the cage. But the biggest problem was that the bars were only a few centimeters from my head. Did cover them with padding but I was always afraid that my head would hit the metal in the event of an accident.
I’ll have a rear half cage for sale in a few weeks - 40mm diameter main hoop on the floor behind the seats and two 40mm rear stays that pass through the parcel shelf to bolt to the chassis rail in the rear wheel arch. No diagonal so you can still see out the back.
I don’t know what make it is but I’ll post pics after my new cage is in, so some time after Easter. It did have mounts sticking forwards for the front half of a cage but I took those off as they were a bit too close to my head. I wouldn’t want to have a full cage unless I was wearing a helmet all the time.
Does the softtop raise and lower, and seat travel still work with the your cage.
My soft top did go up and down, back when I had one. My hard top fits over it too.
As it is a half cage the main hoop has legs that go all the way to the floor behind the seats - this does limit travel. I’m 5’9" and I can get my bucket seat about one more click further back than I need, so it’s not great for taller drivers.
The roof still works with my cage, and the seat still moves properly, although anyone over 5’10 may struggle to see as the bar across the top of the screen obscures the view a little.
The good news is that it’s for sale
The bad news is, the rest of the car comes with it.
The really good news is that it has everything you need for a track beast.
Well if you want a 4 point cage then you can get one from me!

Also if you want any track day advice, setup, etc etc. Just ask

I am also looking for roll cage for protection, doesn’t need to be full one as only do the occaisional track day.
It does however need to be able to have my soft top and glass rear screen go up and down.
Is a 94 1.8, an ideas?
Sam
Alex,
Have a look on ebay, a company called TR Lane are doing a cracking bolt-in roll cage at the mo. Had mine on for about a month now and its really tightened everything up at the rear.
£150 (reserve) was enough to secure it, plus £25 postage and I chose the diagonal cross brace at an additional £25 also.
