Audi A3?
never thought of the A3, the right size as well. wonder what insurance might be?
Just for fun I went on webuyanycar with the spotless low mileage auto Picanto; £4354… yes they are having a laugh
As Janice Joplin sang “Oh Lord won’t you buy me a Mercedes Benz”. Too big and pricey I know but I just couldn’t resist…
Polo or Golf
Joe, what about the Fiat 500 convertible? No, I’m not joking, it would seem ideal for what you want. If the price is right of course!
I agree & also considering the beetle apparently (although i think thats a buit girley, sorry ladies but thats just me 6’ 5" hairy old git )??
I had an Audi S4 auto convertible for a couple of years (2007 model) and it was a terrific all rounder. Possibly a bit thirsty for a shopping trolley however, the 6 cylinder models might be worth a look.
With a Peugeot Engine after 2007 (not the most reliable and expensive to fix)
Triumph stag if you like the roar of a V8 and can put up with terrible fuel consumption and all the potential problems of an old classic although I understand the cooling problems are modifiable ???
The people I have talked to with Saab and Beetle (new generation) convertibles say that you need a wind block to stop wind buffeting in the front and even more so in the back.
That makes them two seaters as the wind block basically makes the back seat useless.
They advise that if you are sitting at say 60mph without a wind block it is no use for people in the back of the car.
Therefore they advise it is a two seater with two boots, one in the boot and the other in the back seat.
They say if you were only doing say 10 miles or so at 30 mph it is OK ish.
That may well suit your situation if the kids are only taken on short journeys with the hood down.
Also you either have a tiny boot or no leg room between the back of the front seats and the front of the back seats or both.
Rolls Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe?
A bit on the “HUGE” side of “small” though.
Nissan March (Micra) cabriolet, this one has a bit of a retro-touch, and its an (old fashioned, bulletproof) automatic

There are Citroen C1 Airscapes, which come with 5 doors.
While on the subject of Nissan, there’s also the Figaro and Micra cc. As before Focus, Golf, A3 also VW Eos, Vauxhall Astra twin top or Citroen Pluriel.
my wife has a convertible mini. It’s the most horrible thing to drive. When it had run- flat tyres it was unbearable. Better since I changed them to normal But still really hard. You also need a degree to work out the interface to pair your phone or reset the clock. It’s a fashion accessory but not good at anything else. She loves it though because it looks great with its big wheels and pop up wing.
I currently have an A3 diesel convertible and although its not a 5 its a pretty decent car. Lots of room and a quality finish. Engine is pretty quiet too, with very good MPG
We had a Megane Cabrio for 12 years, we bought it when it was 2 years old.
It was a lovelly car, never let us down, never grumbled and never failed an MOT. although the rear seats were pretty usless if I were driving.
