- My MX5 NC is one of the lucky ones with virtually no rust , but has been kept indoors over winter most of its life.
This year I cannot put it in the garage as I need to work on another car , should I just leave it outside or buy a car cover and if so what type ?
Mine lives outside all year and I’ve had no issues. Personally I think car covers do more harm than good.
On the other hand I’ve used one had no problems although, I recently had some stripes and a bonnet bulge blacked so I’m looking at a half cover to prevent it snagging the updated look
Personally, I’d go down the oily rag road for underneath the car to keep it as good as possible. My mate covers his 5 every winter, tho’ his is under a carport too which keeps the worst of the elements off it.
Same predicament. Figured a half cover would be a winner to protect the roof and to keep crud out of the drains. I plan on driving the car once a week over winter on dry weekends.
I have superb sea views and no garage and have done for twenty three years. Cars are covered in salt after a ‘Blow’ With a bi-yearly wax and some attention to rubber occasionally, we haven’t suffered cosmetic damage.
What does get eaten at without any annual refresh of Waxoil et all is the underneath of the car.

If you want to cover over the top in a windy area like ours you need not just a top cover but also a soft undergarment too and lots of straps so the whole cover doesn’t move.
A high quality cover came with our car but I’m leery about using it TBH.
