Help, I have a 97 mk1, with a wheel bearing on the way out. After stripping down the brakes etc and removing the wheel nut, I’ve separated the suspension at the top. Problem is the driveshaft seems to be seized, given it a tap or two, with a drift and hammer and no joy. Any ideas? or will I have to replace the driveshaft, hub & carrier?
cheers
The wsm says refit the locknut so that it is flush with the end of the drive shaft and then hit it with a soft faced hammer…good luck…
BTW G’day mate, Welcome to the Forum
They can be very tight! If you can’t knock it out with a few good hammer blows you’ll need a press or a puller. I’ve heard of cases where even a press hasn’t shifted them though so you may need to replace the lot. Rebuild the suspension so you are hitting against something solid until the shaft initially gives.
tried it with a small hammer, big hammer and wd40 and its seized solid. So it looks like I’m going have to replace the lot.
So do I just need a hub, hub carrier, brake baking plate and a driveshaft?
I have a mk1, no abs & no lsd, I’m guessing I have to have an exact match or are the parts from the 1.6 interchangeable?
cheers
